Turning Off & On my iMac

I had an unexpected experience when I was trying to adjust the tilt of
my mid-2010 27" iMac (running OS 10.6.7) by grabbing the outer edges at
the bottom and accidentally pushing the power button, the computer just
shut off with out any warning, after a brief hesitation I pushed the
power button again and the computer came back to life with all the open
applications just as they had been.

I did not expect that I would be able to return to where it had abruptly
left off. Is this normal behavior?

Curious temperature / transfer speed behaviour

In the continuing saga over the odd hanging behavior of my iMac...

Three temperature points done over two cycles (last night and today).

CPU temp 30 - 40C during tests with a CPU load of 2 - 4% on each core
over the course of the transfer; occasional jumps to 10 - 20%.

Test: transfer a large (closed) file from the system disk to a backup
disk via Firewire. Same file is transferred each time.

HD temperature Time to transfer one
43 GB file (mm:ss)

1st round
28 - 38C (rose 10û during test) 13:50

48C 22:51

50C 24:11

2nd round (machine cooled overnight (Sleep)).
30 - 39C (rose 9û during test) 14:01

48C 23:09

50C 24:08

More and more it seems the HD in the iMac slows down in ability to read
as HD temperature goes up.

Could be the internal read error rate is higher?

The disk speed is lower as temperature rises?

Smart status is "verified".

WDC WD5000AAKS-40YGA0 (500 GB Western Digital).

With another cycle of tests I've noticed the "freeze" correlates more
closely to the temperature of the HD bay than the HD temperature itself.
(Unless the HD is reporting temperatures late because of the issue
itself?)

So I'm wondering if it's more of a mechanical issue (thermal expansion
affecting a connection or something of that nature) than the HD itself.

Now I got the "freezes" to occur again whenever the HD temp crosses 51C.

I DL'd a program called SMART Utility. It reports failures whenever the
HD is in this hanging mode. (Apple Disk Utility reports the disk as
"verified" even when the computer is in the intermittent hang state ...)

The spec for the drive says operating temperature of 0 to 60C.

Per Google, page 6 of this report,
http://labs.google.com/papers/disk_failures.pdf
it appears that the best temperature range to operate a HD is about
35-45C. (If I'm interpreting that right).

Given the "failing" report from SMART Utility and that reports only
occur when in the "hang" zone, I'll run the disk in the range above by
manually controlling the fan (if I keep it at 1200 rpm that seems enough
for most of my use).

As the computer is still under Apple Care, will they say "there's no
problem, the SMART status is 'verified'" or will they accept my report
and the report from SMART Utility?

Will they accept putting in a disk that I supply to replace the failing one?
They will want to reproduce the problem themselves, which will require
you to tell them how to reproduce it and give them your machine so they
can.
I had the same problem on an old Intel iMac and carried it to the
Genius Bar. They ran a quick test and it said the center fan was
failing and they replaced it under Apple Care for me.
Fan activity with Leopard

Hi,

iMac G5 without iSight + Leopard 10.5.6

Since I've made the upgrade from Panther 10.3.9 to Leopard 10.5.6,
I have noticed that the Fan activity is bigger, there's much
more noise and they runs Faster ...

Is it because Leopard needs more power from the CPU ?
(in comparaison with Panther)

What's your experience / feedback ?

TIA,

When my iMac G5 works in a very intensive way,
it switch suddely in the sleep mode.

It didn't happend under Panther 10.3.9

I think it happend because the CPU is too hot.

Do you know if it's possible to stop this switch ?
iG5 fans

Today, my iMac G5 started running its fan faster than usual. It wasn't
that noisy, not about to crash into the Hudson (or not, as the case
might be) but just more than it should be. I looked in Activity Monitor,
but the heaviest CPU activity was due to Activity monitor. And it was
around 7%. This went on all day whenever the Mac was awake. To begin
with, I could see that the sun was shining brilliantly onto the back of
the iMac, so okay, winter's over... We went out to get a shopping life.
Back this evening, woke the Mac and the fans gently ramped up. No good.

So, I tried the usual best thing; I restarted it.

And now after half an hour it's still almost totaly quiet. As it should
be.

Why the hell would it do that?
My iMac (C2D latest OS etc) seems to wake at random and then fail to
sleep after the period set in Preferences. The wake event is recorded as:
Oct 22 21:06:43 upstairs-2 kernel[0]: System Sleep
Oct 23 04:39:53 upstairs-2 airportd[3855]: FastFinder scanning channels
again

The computer will stay switched on with this system.log message every
two minutes or so:

Any idea why it might wake/fail to sleep?
Scheduled Shutdown and External Hard Drives

I have my iMac scheduled (via Energy Saver prefs) to shut down at 3 AM and
start up at 8 AM. I'm not sure if I should adhere to such a routine, or
simply leave the machine running 24 X 7 (both alternatives have their vocal
supporters, and I'd welcome your opinions. :) ).

I also have Time Machine backing up to an external drive, and will be
running SuperDuper! to a second, daisy-chained external.

Prior to getting this machine, I'd only connect an external drive when I
wanted to perform a manual backup; I'd then dismount it and turn it off,
_especially_ prior to shutting down the computer to which it was connected.
As I understood it, that was the recommended way of connecting/disconnecting
an external drive.

But now that the externals are always connected and "on" to enable automatic
backups, I'm unsure what happens when the Energy Saver schedule kicks in to
shut down the iMac: Does it shut down the system "gracefully," by first
dismounting the external drives?

Not sleeping

Daniel Cohen <danspam@f2s.com> writes:

> My iMac (late 2007) running 10.5.5 (and previously 10.5.4) seems not to
> sleep unless I make it do so manually.
>
> The Energy Saver setting doesn't seem to work, but on the other hand
> display sleep does work. This suggests that something unexpected is
> accessing the hard drive.
>
> Is there a known bug regarding this? If not, is there anything I should
> do to find out what is stopping sleep.

This sounds like something is running, so the computer doesn't appear
to be idle. In my case it's either a weather or clouds display program
(or maybe both), so I have the user who won't give them up just put her
computer to sleep manually. These are both menu bar items, they don't
show up in the dock. You may have something similar running...?
I recently purchased 29 new iMac C2Ds and then went to Europe for 24
days. When I recently returned, I found two iMacs which won't start
up upon pressing the power button. Having seen similar behavior on an
iBook, I'm wondering if there is a trick to get the circuit's 5V of
standby voltage to actually do something.

> I can manually make it sleep by hitting command-option eject, or by
> using the Apple menu sleep command. It is set for sleep after 10
> minutes in the Energy pref. pane, but it won't sleep. When I
> troubleshoot this issue, I am making sure there are no apps running that
> require a confirm command to shut down. Also making sure no wonky games
> are running that interfere.
>
> This machine is the last G5 iMac...it has the Eyesight camera, 1 gig of
> RAM, and the latest version of Leopard. The Apple forums talk about a
> sleep issue with some G5 iMacs, but they appear to be earlier models.
>
> Any suggestions? Thanks, as always.
Very often the cause is an application that prevents the machine from
Since the last security update I installed, my iMac's power settings (for
turning the screen off) have been reversed.

They're still set correctly in System Preferences: turn screen off after 3
minutes. However, since the update, the screen now turns *on* after 3 minutes.

Normally, I switch the screen off by moving the mouse to the corner of the
screen, but I'm now finding the screen comes on *exactly* 3 minutes after
doing this! I've tried rebooting, and changing the settings before changing
them back, but it still does the same thing.
Drive spins up every 15 minutes

I'm running 10.5.2 on a Core 2 Duo iMac.

Every 15 minutes I hear my Firewire drive spin up for some reason. It's
not on even 15-minute boundaries, so I assume it's tied to my boot or
login times.

It's not Time Machine, it only runs hourly.

I never noticed this happening with the iBook G4 running 10.4.11 that
this machine replaced.

Some third-party utilities I'm running that might be suspects are
SMARTReporter and Compost. But I was running them on the iBook, too.

I tried running fs_usage, to see if I could catch any unusual process
running when I hear it spin up, but nothing really stood out. I saw
Compost, but not at the times of the spin-ups.

I tried using the Energy Saver option not to spin down drives. This is
a little less annoying, since there's no spin-up whine, but I still hear
the sudden buzzing of the drive as it's being accessed.
Airport not working after sleep?

Intel iMac, OS 10.4.11.

After waking the thing up from sleep, Airport seems to be taking a long
time to re-acquire the signal from the wireless point that I've got
plugged into the DG814 modem/router.

(Still running a non-wireless enabled old G4 on the system, so just
plugged a wireless point into the router a couple of years ago).

Other wireless Macs on the system don't have the problem, so it's an
iMac issue, not a modem/router or wirelss point issue.

Tried restarting, turning the router off and on and ditto the wireless
point, but no real joy. It always comes up in the end; just takes time.

I suppose I could just plug an ethernat cable in, but does anyone have
any ideas what might be the problem?
> realised that the thing was going to sleep after half an hour's non-use
> anyway.
>
> This is no good, as I need access to it remotely during the day, so don't want
> it going to sleep then. So I switched "Put the computer to sleep when it is
> inactive for:" to "Never". And now it doesn't go to sleep at the scheduled
>
> Is this normal behaviour? Is there a setting I'm missing?

It should sleep on schedule. However, when I had a similar problem it
was due to an application not allowing it to sleep. Try a scheduled
sleep while you're around - with your normal app set up running and see
if it obeys. I forget now exactly what it was that prevented the sleep
but I know it does work as it did it to me yesterday - went to sleep at
the scheduled time which I'd forgotten to wipe - and slept half way
through encoding a dvd... It started encoding again when I woke it and
seems to have picked up again where it left off but I haven't played the
finished product yet...
Mains leads

Hi Some,

Did any of the iMac models come with strain relief facilities on the
mains leads do you know, the sort of thing that would stop the mains
lead pulling / falling out when you turned the screen (unit) a few
degrees to stop reflections or share the screen with a fellow student
etc?

I have had that happen on stand alone CRT's but then so doing doesn't
lose all your open data and most of the stand alone TFT's I've used do
have cable guides built into the stand so they don't generally suffer
the same issue.

All the best ..

iMac G5 fan won't stop blowing

Hi,

Usually, I only hear this fan blowing when I have a CD or DVD in the
optical drive. Now, however, I have removed the DVD and the fan
continues blowing even after a reboot. Is there anything I can do to
stop this or does the iMac need to be taken in for AppleCare hardware
support?

Thanks.

intel Imac - wont go to sleep (another)

hey folks,

i have an intel based 20" imac sitting on my desk, w/ a second monitor
connected & running xp in parallels. even tho i have it enabled, my
mac will not go to sleep mode by itself; it will go to sleep if i use
the apple menu. it will shut the displays off w/o problems.

i thought id see if there were any discoveries or consensus on this
subject, which seems to be popping up occasionally.

as far as usb devices, i have:

- the standard keyboard
- ms optical mouse plugged into keyboard
- Western Digital MyBook USB 2 external harddrive

..there is no movement of the mouse preventing sleep. the WD claims it
will go to sleep when a computer tells it to (confirmed w/ manually-
induced sleep).

im going to try some things when i get home, like unplugging the
mouse, and shutting down parallels (cant remember if ive tested for
that), and will report back.

thanks,
SeaMonkey and sleep mode, with OSX

preface: I use SeaMonkey (SM), the continuation of the abandoned
Mozilla Suite.

post:
Any Mac OSX SM users have problems with their machine staying asleep?

I rarely ever turn my iMac G5 off, I just put it to sleep. SM is ALWAYS
running. Sometimes the machine wakes back up before I even leave the
room, sometimes I go away for an hour and come back and the machine is
awake with just the screen asleep. This has been going on since maybe
January (I do every OSX update the week it comes out and every SM one also).

I recently started quitting SM, and the problem seems to have gone away.
I know there's only a few OSX guys that read this group, could you try
duplicating my problem, or verifying if you are already "sleep prone
non-quitters"? ;-)

GW
SM 1.1.2 on OSX 10.4.10 on both iMac G5, and PowerBook G4
ps
I used to have a problem where if I clicked "get messages" too soon
after waking the machine up (i.e. network conn not reestablished yet) SM
would crash the whole User Account. I'd have to log-out, log-in. That
has either gone away or I finally learned to count to ten in my head
before clicking anything.

I'm sure the power light on my iMac used to be lit when it's on - it
only illuminates (flashing on/off) when in sleep mode. Is this my fading
memory or is it supposed to be like this?
iMac G5 powers down unexpectedley

The subject says it all. If I leave my iMac unattended for somewhere
between 2-3 hours, it will power down or crash. I'm not sure which,
since I'm never there to see it happen. There is nothing in the logs to
indicate the reason for the shutdown or anything suggesting a crash. I
have no Energy Saver setting that tells it to power down, nor are there
any schedules set. So I don't know what I should do. Any advice aside
from sitting next to it w/o touching anythin for 2-3 hours?
TIA

Energy saver schedule not working

If I try to set my iMac to power on/wake/sleep/power off using the
Schedule function in the Energy Saver system preference app nothing
happens. In all other respects I can sleep/power off ok, manually and
using an app like iWillQuit.

I have tried resetting the PMU, the SMU and deleting the plist file for
autowakeup. I have tried in Safe Mode with no other apps running as
well and got no joy. I have tried looking in the logs but to be honest
was not entirely sure where I should be looking and what for.

Before I try a clean install has anyone come across the same problem?

17" iMac 1.9GHz G5 with iSight, 1.5GB memory Mac OS X (10.4.6)
iMac G5 and Sleep or always on?

I sometimes have problems with certain USB devices
causing my iMac G5 to crash during sleep or restart. I find these
problems are eliminated if i set the mac not to sleep but to just
switch off the monitor. Do you think its bad to have the mac on all the
time?, also will it shorten the life of my mac if i shut it down alot?.
