> >>The problem does not occur if I reboot with the shift key down. I
> > Then it's either a control panel or extension causing the problem. What
> > extensions are installed?
> I'm running OS 8.0
>
> Under System Folder/Extensions I have 136 files and folders. I'm not

If you can try to upgrade to OS 8.1. My understanding OS 8.0 had a few
bugs in it. OS 8.1 was to eliminate them.
keys to instantly turn off a PowerMac 6500 witthout the normal shutdown

I just recently had an odd happening in which a box of Kleenex fell from
the top of the monitor to my 6500's keyboard while I was hitting some
modifier keys. The computer instantly turned itself off, as if somebody
pulled the plug, or hit that little round button on the back. I'm not
sure what keys the box hit. I'm curious what key combination could do
this. The 6500 has Mac OS 8.6 installed on it.

screen dimms while installing OS 10.2.4

Hello,
I recently acquired a powerbook G3 233. It has 160 megs of ram and
a 6.4 gig hard drive. OS 8.6 was installed on it but it was set to
French and I wanted it in English so I got a set of OS 10.2.4
CDs and tried installing it.

It seems to install fine but what is happening is that when the
Mac OSX splash screen starts the system dimms the screen to the point
where I can't see anything. If I stare at the screen I can just make
out the text and windows although sometimes I can't see where the
mouse is. After much squinting I was able to install the OS but the
problem persists.

Any ideas on how to get the screen brightness to stay reasonable?
I turned off the energy saving features (I think) but that didn't
make any difference. In OS 8.x the screen was perfect.

Otherwise it seems to boot up reasonably quick.

If this is the wrong newsgroup to post this please tell me. I haven't
needed to post anything in a while...

thx,
PB 5300 ASLEEP FOR 3 YEARS!

MY Brother was a terrible alcoholic until 6 months or so ago when he decided
to dry out.

Now he has a job where he needs email. He called me for assistance, as
before I left for the Netherlands, I set a working computer and printer down
on a table at his house where it, as I predicted, collected dust for three
years. Except that it had remained plugged in and in sleep mode.

He called me, opened the computer, and the only thing needing adjustment was
the dial-up number for earthlink.

It even attempted to make a connection to the old number, taking the
appropriate route via remote access/PPP and a pcmcia card modem no less,
giving the appropriate error messages.

One change of the phone number (which was a stretch for me to remember where
in sys 8.6 one did this), and it connected and loaded a home page!

Hooray for this PB 5300.
Lombard powerup problems

Hi!

Strange problems on 333mhz Lombard:
When powerbook gets power from adapter (before I turn it on), green led
turns on and stays on, and power button doesn't react - so boot is
imposible, screen is dark.
It takes several plugging in and out for powerbook to became normally
turned of, then I can turn it on.

At the same time (but not necessarily connected ?!), another problem: I
had OS 8.5.1 (because I replaced hard from older powerbook), and Lombard
used to boot from this system, even though it shouldn't boot form 8.5.1
and there was 9.2.2 installed. Startup disc control panel didn't help,
so I removed older OS.
Now it seems processor at first can't find the OS. On power up, there's
"?" icon and some nasty clicking of hard drive. It boots after 15 sec.
or so.

Any ideas will be appreciated...
lombard batteries

My lombard battery seems to have died. Basically, when it claims to be
fully charged, it won't last much longer than 20 minutes. I recall a
battery utility that came with older system software- I can't remember
if it was with 8.6 or even further back though. Is there anything worth
trying, or at 5 years old, has the battery just had it? It certainly
doesn't seem cost effective to get a new one- and I no longer take the
powerbook on the road.
