Wake up promlem with Jaguar & MacG4?

Only sometimes, my G4 running Jaguar10.5.1 (and original) does not wake up
properly. I am using a USB Apple keyboard with a Macally mouse plugged into
the keyboard.

When I press a key, the mouse lights up but I have no control from the
keyboard or the mouse. The screen remains dark. The pilot light in the power
button does not vary in intensity as it does during normal sleep.

The caps lock key does not light up when pressed.

If I unplug the mouse from the keyboard or unplug the keyboard and replug,
the mouse light does not turn on.

There is power on the USB cable that I use because I can light up USB
powered speakers. That power is not available during normal sleep.

If I press the power button long enough to turn off the computer and reboot,
everything seems to be OK.

I conclude that there is something going on in Leopard that keeps USB
devices from being serviced correctly. What can that be? How can that be
corrected?
Power Mac won't stay asleep

Running Mac OS X (10.2.6) on a Power Mac G4 1GHz (FW800) since February,
and suddenly since the other day I've had trouble keeping it asleep.

I'll put it to sleep, and come back some hours later and it's awake
again.

Any ideas what could be causing this?

Could it be an app? I tend to have a couple web browsers open, Mail,
iChat, iTunes, iCal, Address Book, Stickies, Suitcase, and Word open
pretty constantly. (But, then again, I always have, and the problem just
started.)
Wake-on-Lan on OS 9.2.2

Hi, I have two G4's, each with OS 9.2.2 and OS X (10.2.8). I'm trying
to wake them up with magic packets -- one works, the other doesn't. As
far as I can tell, I've configured all the relevant settings the same
(i.e., checked "wake on network administrative access," made sure
tcp/ip and appletalk are set to use Ethernet, etc.).

The 733MHz G4 always wakes up when I send it the magic packet (I'm
using wol.exe from http://www.gammadyne.com/cmdline.htm on a windows
machine). The Dual 1-GHz G4 does not wake up if I've gone to sleep
from OS 9.2.2, but it DOES wake up if I've gone to sleep from OSX
10.2.8, so that seems to rule out that the network card isn't
compatible or that there are connection or hardware problems.

Are there other settings that I should be checking are identical? Or
does anyone know of certain configurations or extensions that prevent
wake-on-lan?

Background: I am trying to wake the machines at night for a daily
backup. Users often run them in OS9 when they need to run certain
apps. I thought about that maybe these apps are leaving files open,
etc., but I've tried going to sleep right after a clean boot and still
can't wake it up. In all cases, tapping the mouse or the keyboard
wakes the computer up fine.

Other info that may or may not be relevant: both machines have DAVE
filesharing software, v.4.1. For everything I could think to check,
the DAVE settings are configured identically (except for the name, of
course). Also, both machines are configured for DHCP and the "DHCP
Client ID" setting is blank. Both are getting registered on the DHCP
server with the correct MAC address.

Any help or ideas are greatly appreciated.
Thanks much!
Wallstreet Power Problems Help!

A friend of mine tripped on the power supply cord of my Wallstreet and
knocked it a short distance to a carpeted floor. Since then, I've been
having problems with it.

I'm running OS 10.2.8

First, it would charge the battery and run off the battery, but would
not run directly from the power supply.

I opened the computer up, removed the Power Input/Audio Board and
resoldered the power plug, something I've had to do before. I have
top-notch soldering skills and use anti-static precautions. Resoldering
the plug didn't help, but I did find one large surface mount resistor
with a cracked solder joint, which I fixed.

Now, it will run off the power supply or off the battery, but it will
not charge the battery!

I guess I need to figure out which of the three boards I need to try to
replace: the Power Input/Audio Board, the PMU board, or the Charging
Board.

Which is the most likely culprit to start with? Or may it have been a
cascade failure that messed up multiple board?

Thanks!

Battery problem with a 12" Powerbook

I have had a problem with my powerbook of late. I am running under 10.2.8 and
the powerbook is about a year old and has been mostly run on a powersupply and
rarely on the battery.

The problem is that lately when running under battery when I get down to a
reading of about 50% without warning the computer goes to sleep and the battery
lights read as dead. No warning that power is getting low no nothing.

I calibrated the battery when I first got it, and when it was new wouldnt give
me a warning until under 25% and sleep just before a 0% reading.

I am suspecting the battery but wanted to ask if anyone has had a simular
issue, before jumping to a conclusion.

Has anyone out there tried a aftermarket battery for their G4 12" and what luck
have you? I haven't looked into any aftermarket like LIND and the like yet.

Any helpfull comments would be greatly appreciated.
To sleep, perchance to dream? OS 10.2.8 - ay, There's the Rub

Hi all,
I recently updated to 10.2.8 (2 years late, but I tend to be cautious
:-/ ) on my dual 1GHz G4 tower with a 23" Apple display.
Now I cant get the machine to waken from sleep mode. The CPU fires up
but the screen remains blank and I have to restart the Mac.
Any fixes/patches out there?

Trusting my caution, I failed to make a backup of the OS before I
upgraded from 10.2.3. If no fixes are available, how can I downgrade
again? I have the original 10.2.1 CDs. Start again and upgrade to
10.2.3? Is it still available?

Thanks
Just to add a PS to this story:
I seem to have found the cause of my G4's display not waking from sleep
mode: Looks like there's a bug or incompatibility between OS 10.2.8 and
that stunning desktop image software "OSXplanet 2" which shows an image
of earth (or planet of your choice) with regular updates of the weather
I have been having problems ever since I installed microsoft word on my
12" dual usb ibook. First it couldn't find an os so I had to reinstall
from the system disc (I think it was os 10.2 but am not positive) and
in the process wiped out my entire itunes library - still don't know if
that is recoverable - any suggestions? Within a short time my current
problem appeared which is that once I turned it on, it searched
forever, never started up but never produced an error message of any
kind either, and then I discovered I can't turn it off. The screen is
dark and there is no response to any key or combination of keys. I
don't want to unplug it for fear that I may cause more problems, so it
is sitting on its side (for cooling purposes) waiting for a solution.
Is it time to take it in to a mac repair shop? It's out of warranty.

screen dimms while installing OS 10.2.4

Hello,
I recently acquired a powerbook G3 233. It has 160 megs of ram and
a 6.4 gig hard drive. OS 8.6 was installed on it but it was set to
French and I wanted it in English so I got a set of OS 10.2.4
CDs and tried installing it.

It seems to install fine but what is happening is that when the
Mac OSX splash screen starts the system dimms the screen to the point
where I can't see anything. If I stare at the screen I can just make
out the text and windows although sometimes I can't see where the
mouse is. After much squinting I was able to install the OS but the
problem persists.

Any ideas on how to get the screen brightness to stay reasonable?
I turned off the energy saving features (I think) but that didn't
make any difference. In OS 8.x the screen was perfect.

Otherwise it seems to boot up reasonably quick.

If this is the wrong newsgroup to post this please tell me. I haven't
needed to post anything in a while...

thx,
Sleep Question

Most of the posts regarding sleep issues have had to do with the
computer NOT sleeping. So here's a twist. My computer (Dual 2G G5 /
OSX.3) drops off at the preset time, even if it's in the middle of a
download and/or iTunes is playing.

I always presumed (dangerous word, I know!) that these things would be
seen as "system activity" but evidently if there are no keystrokes or
mouse movements detected, the computer drops off to sleep no matter
what else might be going on at the time.

I have a utility called SleepLess that allows me to switch the sleep
function on and off from a menulet and even lets the dispaly sleep
while the computer continues to run. So If I just have some background
music playing or I'm downloading some large files (like the 60MB OSX
updates) the computer won't drop off in the middle. But one would
think that the system should be able to deal with this on it's own,
no?

DD
"It's easy when you know how..."
Sleep mode not right after archive/reinstall to 10.3

You folks were very helpful informing me how to reinstall OS X on my G4.

I was at 10.3.7 but was crashing a lot (mouse would freeze). I used the
original 10.2 discs to archive/reinstall and then used the 10.3 discs to
upgrade.

Everything seems to be fine, except, the light on the G4 does not have that
slow "pulse" when it's put to sleep. Also, it does not sound like the fans
or drives slow down like it did before.

Can anyone shed any light on the "pulsing light? Is there a way to test the
sleep mode and be sure it is working or is there a way to fix this?

USB 2.0 pci card & deep sleep

I'm looking for a USB 2 pci card that will support DEEP SLEEP for my G4
450 DP machine running OS 10.2.8 and maybe 10.3x soon.

The card should should have 4 or 5 ports, cost $10 - $20 and hopefully
support 2.0 speed under 10.2.8. There probably will not be any storage
or card readers attached to this card, only scanners, printers,
Bluetooth Dongle, PDA dock ect. so waking up from deep sleep will not
cause problems when the pci bus wakes up.

Thanks for any Info

Wallstreet, 10.2.8, two darkness problems:
1. On startup (it didn't do this with original 10.2) after a point
early in the booting up, it futzes with the screen, and since the update
to 10.2.8 the illumination is off from that point on, and stays off
until booting is just about complete and I poke the brightness rocker
button. Then it comes on.
2. If I put it to sleep the illumination stays off, period.
I have an original model Titanium G4 Powerbook that has been running
10.2. My wife is trying to use it and we found that we need the
email.app that comes with 10.3, so I just did an upgrade to 10.3.

It seemed to go OK to the point that it asked for the second disk.
After I put it in, we went to watch a show that our TiVo had saved.
When I came back, the PowerBook was sleeping --- and won't wake up.

How do I get it to wake up? I hate to just yank the battery as there
may be a step I need to do for the installation yet...
Hello,
Could anyone please tell me if there has been a discussion of problems
with iMacs waking from sleep?
This problem is occurring with an iMac G4 ?(circular stand model),
system 10.2.6, probably 800 mhz, 256 ram, 40 gb hard drive.
It is kept in Sleep mode, but on trying to wake it, approximately 1 of
every 10 times, it either wakes to a Question Mark or a spinning
beachball that keeps spinning.
Any advice appreciated.

Battery life

I have a Powerbook G3 Firewire with 640 Megs RAM, running 10.2.6. It
generally sits on me desk because I'm using it as a server. When its on
my desk it is plugged in.

I notice the battery life sucks when I try to go portable. For example,
I went portable last night, but never got to use it. So it sat on a
table, cover closed, asleep for about 24 hours. Then I tried to use it.
I used it for word processing for about ten minutes and the battery
indicator said it was at 73%. I decided to visit the Energy Saver
control panel to see if I could set it to optimize for longest battery
life. There was an estimate that read just over an hour left. I tried
playing with the settings, but the time estimate just kept going down. I
hopped over to the Screen Saver panel to see what was set there. I
noticed a new option so I watched it for about a minute and the screen
went blank.

At this point, I just figured the computer went to sleep because it was
optimized for longest battery life. But I couldn't wake it. So I checked
the battery indicator on the battery itself and it was dead. I plugged
the power adapter back in and everything was fine.

All in all, I got about 15 minutes of use before it went dead; about
five after the indicator read 73%. That would imply I can only get about
20 minutes on a full charge.

Is this battery hosed because I leave the power adapter plugged in all
the time? Is there a possibility I could salvage it somehow? When I
first got it, I ran OS 9.x and was able to play almost all of The
Patriot on DVD while hooked up to my TV. That was a little over two
years ago.
iBook Battery Capacity

After upgrading to 10.2.8 - I can't recall any other milestone - my 600
MHz 14" iBook's battery suddenly lost most of it's capacity. I
researched the problem the usual way, and found a lot of info on
osxhints.com. Seems like there's a lot of info on it once you start
looking, naturally. Lots of advice on PMU and PRAM resets, stuff like
that.

Using some terminal scripts and X-battery, I found that I had a battery
capacity of about 0.98 amp-hours. This was way lower than anyone else
had reported in forums; maybe a half-hour from full charge to the
low-power warning.

This morning I ignored the warning and went all the way down to
complete loss of power , save for the pulsing sleep lite. After pluggin
in, the capacity was suddenly 1.95 A-h. Quite the improvment.

Anybody else got any similar tales, or advice? I think my Apple Care
is still good, but I'd prefer to find out why my capacity dropped. I
usually work plugged-in, and only go off the charger occasionally.

Zapping PRAM in OS X (to restore Appletalk?)

I got a strange problem at work. The Macs in the Graphics dept. running OS
10.2.x can see the Appletalk Zones and have no problem printing to two Xerox
DC 12s running off Fiery servers and an HP 5si/MX.

If you put OS 10.3.x on one of the Macs and print through IP printing to the
Xerox DC 12s, they either spew out pages of Postscript code, or have the
print jobs continuously stall in the Printer Setup Utility no matter how many
times you restart them, or else give the message "will retry connection in 10
seconds". About 10% of the time you actually print what you want. I have
the latest Fiery XP12 service pack 1 PPD's on the Mac.

The HP 5si spewed out Postscript pages until I found that the previous tech
had set it up with the 5si Mopier PPD. Using the regular 5si PPD seemed to
fix that.

Trying to print via Appletalk as a workaround doesn't work as 10.3.x doesn't
see the Appletalk Zones, even with it active in the Network panel and
Director Access.

This is repeatable, 10.2.x does see the Appletalk zones in the Graphics area
and 10.3.x doesn't. The weird thing is, today I did a clean install of 10.3
on a laptop and connected it to a port in Graphics. It saw the Appletalk
zones! Even with Appletalk unchecked in the Directory Access app but with it
active in the Network Panel I could add a Printer in the Printer setup
utility seeing the Appletalk zones. Unfortunately I didn't get a chance to
try to print through Appletalk as I immediately had to take the laptop to
another building. I plugged it in a wallport in that other building and it
displayed the zones. I can pretty much consistently see the zones in the
this other building running OS 10.3.x, it's the graphics location that is the
problem. Don't know enough about networking to know if there's some protocol
in the graphics building that 10.3.x doesn't get along with.

So in conclusion, I bring the laptop back to graphics and of course it
doesn't see the zones again, where it did right after the clean 10.3 install
earlier. Now when I go in to the Network utility and tell it to Display
Saved PRAM Appletalk information it keeps showing the last zone name as the
other building where the Appletalk zones work fine (not the Graphics zone).
I keep trying to zap the PRAM in a desparate attempt to make the Mac forget
that zone and perhaps recognize the graphics zone, like it did ONCE.

So I'm looking for a utility in X like Techtool that will zap the PRAM
completely, because holding down the 4 keys at startup aint doing it.

As you can see I have several problems to deal with and zapping the PRAM
completely is probably the least of them. But before I contact Network
Services to see if there's something strange with the graphics network I want
to try everything possible at the desktop level.

Any comments are welcome. I can't find any similar behavior in Apple's Tech
Notes, Macintouch or Google.

Screen dimming on startup and sleep

I have a WallStreet Powerbook running Mac OS X 10.2.8. This machine has
one annoying characteristic that manifests itself as follows:

When I turn the machine on, the screen stays dim and when the system is
finally up, I can get the screen to full brightness by clicking once on
the increase brightness button.

The screen will remain at full brightness until it goes to sleep. When
that happens the screen is at a brightness where the screen is dim
again but I can see (if I squint) the menu bar. I can then restart the
machiine and go through the scenario all over again.

Is there any way to make this thing work right again? Mess with
preferences, etc?

Thanks.
Need PCI FireWire Card to replace dead onboard firewire in quicksilver G4 - want deep sleep and no file corruption

I've got a Quicksilver G4 Running OS 10.3.4 that recently lost it's onboard
Firewire. So it's time to add it back in with a PCI card.

I started reading about deep sleep being inhibited by add in PCI firewire
cards.
http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/firewire/fw_usb_card_deep_sleep.html
and file corruption with USB/Firewire PCI Combo Cards
http://www.macintouch.com/pcicombo.html

I definitely want to preserve the ability of my computer to enter into deep
sleep, and I don't much like the idea of data corruption resulting from
certain combos of USB and Firewire devices being plugged into the card
simultaneously. That sorta defeats the purpose of the combo card.

Well now I've read so many problem reports that my head is spinning. I
figure some of the user feedback (which is mostly from 2003 and earlier in
2004) on macintouch and xlr8yourmac might be specific to each individual
funky system, and furthermore might be outdated by OS/driver/firmware
patches. Hopefully some of these problems have indeed been fixed, because
after all this reading, I'm feeling like I'm trying to choose the "least
broken card" whereas I'd like to select one that "just works".

So I'm definitely looking for recommendations for a trouble free PCI
FireWire or FireWire / USB2.0 combo card that doesn't interfere with deep
sleep, corrupt your data, or otherwise make anything blow up. If you've got
a recommendation, feel free to stop reading right now and reply to the
group.

Here is what I've gathered and distilled from reading I've done so far.

1) The macally FH2-UF24 USB2.0 / Firewire PCI Combo Card.
http://www.macally.com.au/product_info.php?cPath=2&products_id=51
Most of the reports on xlr8yourmac say it will let the computer go to deep
sleep when nothing is attached. Macally acknowledges deep sleep problems on
their support page
http://www.macally.com/techsupport/faq/faq_pci_sleep_issue.html
There are reports of sleep/wake/freeze problems with certain devices
attached and the file corruption issue (which I see no mention of on the
macally site) is of even greater concern
http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/firewire/fw_usb_card_deep_sleep.html#corruption
http://www.macintouch.com/pcicombo.html
Are any of these issues fixed? Old news yet?
Also, the USB 2.0 combo card doesn't even appear on the US website
http://www.macally.com/products.html
All I see there is the FH-UF2 1.x combo card. There are many more flavors
of PCI cards on the European site. What's the deal with that?

2) Orange Micro OrangeLink+ USB 2.0/Firewire
There is one deep sleep complaint from a guy running the card in a computer
with an OWC Mercury Extreme 1.4Ghz on OS 10.2.8.
http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/firewire/fw_usb_card_deep_sleep.html
I'd need to read/hear some positive feedback before assuming it will sleep
nicely in my quicksilver.

3) Sonnet Tango 2.0 FireWire/USB 2.0
http://sonnettech.com/product/tango_2.html
or the Allegro FW400 http://sonnettech.com/product/allegro400.html
Either one would be fine by me if it played nice with my quicksilver running
10.3.4 and go to deep sleep, but I'm dubious that either one fits the bill
considering the legit looking copy of "Sonnet eNews - March 2004" I turned
up in a Google search.
http://www.tegjpn.net/USeNews.htm - Not that I know anything about this
site, but I can't see why anyone would forge an eNews letter, so I assume
this is legit.
Sonnet eNews - March 2004
Tech Tip - Mac OS X 10.3.x and Deep Sleep

Symptom: After I updated my system software to Mac OS X 10.3.x with a PCI
adapter card installed, or after installing a PCI adapter card into a system
that was already running Mac OS X 10.3.x, the computer will not go all the
way to Deep Sleep.

Issue: When the Mac OS version 10.3.x cannot completely identify a card
running on the PCI bus, it will only put the machine into a so called "doze
mode," the machine is using less power, however the fans continue to run.
This is the power management part of the Mac OS, and prevents malfunctions
of the computer or peripherals that might result from sudden loss of power
to the PCI bus. This is not a defect in either the Mac OS nor in the PCI
card, as this behavior is prescribed by the specifications of sleep mode.

Solution: This is an issue that is not specific to Sonnet's PCI adapter
cards, however it has been seen across a wide range of third party PCI
cards. While Apple has not made any statement regarding future versions of
OS X that will recognize a wider range of PCI cards, it is hoped that this
will be addressed over time.

4) Adaptec FireConnect 4300:
http://www.adaptec.com/worldwide/product/proddetail.html?sess=no&language=English+US&prodkey=AFW-4300&cat=%2fTechnology%2fFireWire-1394%2fFireWire-1394+Adapters

From Adaptec's ASK Knowledgebase, Answer ID 4059 answers the following:
"After installing the FireConnect 4300 adapter in a Mac running Mac OS X
10.2 (Jaguar), the system will no longer come back from the Sleep. Is the
FireConnect 4300 compatible with the Sleep function in Mac OS X?"

"Since the FireConnect 4300 uses standard, embedded 1394/FireWire drivers in
Mac OS X, it should be compatible with Sleep.
If you encounter errors while trying to recover from Sleep, then try
removing all 1394/FireWire devices from the FireConnect adapter and test
Sleep once more. If the system recovers from the Sleep function in the Mac,
then try to isolate the issue to a device by re-attaching them to the
adapter one-by-one."

After reading the Sonnet eNews, I'm dubious that the Adaptec Card does any
better in 10.3.x. Can anyone give me user feedback here?

So.... Those were just a few cards that I had read *some* positive reports
about (as opposed to the 100% negative stuff I read about some keyspan
cards, which sound like they are a disaster in terms of sleeping the
computer into a coma.)

I'll consider any card that gives me working firewire ports again and
preserves my functioning deep sleep mode. Some other cards I spotted in the
massive confusion of reports I've read through:

Fire Wire Depot had the following to say at
http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/firewire/fw_usb_card_deep_sleep.html
With all of the conversations going on in various threads online, we have
determined after doing some testing that the following FireWire Depot PCI
host adapters can go into deep sleep:
1) IOI-4601 dual channel PCI
2) IOI-4602 dual channel PCI
3) U2FW-PCI01 FireWire/USB2 combo PCI

but that was in regards to OS 10.2.8. No clue what the verdict is in
10.3.x.

A 9/12/2003 post to
http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/firewire/fw_usb_card_deep_sleep.html gives me
some hope that this product
http://www.firewiredirect.com/firewire/products/adapters_pcicombo.shtml at
FireWire Direct might stand a chance of satisfying my lofty goals of deep
sleep in 10.3.x, but once again, I'm dubious after reading that Sonnet eNews
report about.

People talking about combo cards that avoid the apparent data corruption
problem of the Macally USB/Firewire combo, pointed to these two
http://www.smartdisk.com/Products/PCICards/PCICards.asp
http://www.ratocsystems.com/english/products/subpages/pcifu2.html praising
them for having Molex connectors on the PCI cards that supply direct power
independently of the PCI bus. I've got no clue if the corruption issue
is/was actually power related, but I'd certainly be happy to grab either one
of these two cards if I hear back some 10.3.x deep sleep success stories
with one of them.

No clue how these IOGEAR cards stack up but they offer a straight firewire
card and a combo card as well
http://iogear.com/main.php?loc=productcategory&category=firewire&category_id=43
Yet another option.

Thanks in advance everyone for any feedback you can offer,
[beige g3] Can it DEEP sleep?

I installed Jaguar on my old world beige g3---when I set the computer
to sleep, I still hear fans blowing (which doesn't happen with any of
the newer macs). Is there anyway I can get DEEP sleep (~zero power
consumption)?

Thanks,
Wallstreet clicks when trying to start up

Instead of the old organ-note sound at start-up, my Wallstreet just
makes a rapid clicking sound and doesn't start.

It was working fine for a couple of days with a new hard drive and new
install of OS 10.2.8 (previously running 9.2) Then I shut it down and
moved to a different place in the house. I plugged in the power brick
and went to restart, but heard no sound.

I notice if I hold down the power key I get a clicking sound; fast if
I'm using the power brick, slower with the battery. In time with the
clicks I can see a faint flash on the edges of the dark screen.

Can anybody HE'P me??!!

Please let me know if these symptoms mean something to you. I'll be very
grateful if you can suggest some way I can get this machine going again.

Thanks much
path leads to despair and utter hopelessness. The other, to total
extinction. Let us pray we have the wisdom to choose correctly."
Sleep2deep

My Lombard, just upgraded to 10.2 and bigger hard drive won't wake up
after long sleep without a keyboard restart.
With 9.1 it was able to revive ,after the same sort of sleep time, after
"any key"
Its not a big deal but is there anything I could do to correct this?
