Hi,

iMac G5 + Leopard 10.5.6

When my iMac G5 works in a very intensive way,
it switch suddely in the sleep mode.

It didn't happend under Panther 10.3.9

I think it happend because the CPU is too hot.

Do you know if it's possible to stop this switch ?

TIA,
Mac not sleeping

My Mac seems to sleep ok manually, but not via Energy Saver. at any
rate, the fan seems to be on (with screen black) if I leave the machine
unused for an hour or two.

I'm pretty sure I know the reason. I stream music to my hifi using a
Squeezebox (wireless hardware) and SlimServer. As SlimServer is a
server, I assume that Energy Saver does not want to sleep the machine if
SlimServer is active.

I'm wondering if there is any third-party software that will ensure the
Mac sleeps when I am not using it. As far as I an concerned, I would be
happy to wake the machine manually when I need to stream music.

Powerbook battery question

I've Powerbook G4 and would like to know if running it with the battery
out (on AC power) will do any damage? I'm aware of the limited cycles
that a battery has and as I tend to use it only with AC power would like
to preserve the battery's charging ability as long as I can.

If this is not a problem, can I remove/insert the battery safely when
the machine is plugged in?

The reason I ask is that with my Toshiba (running XP Pro) I tend to run
it always on AC power but disconnect it when removing/inserting the
battery. Is the Mac different from this? I know that I lose the clock
time when the Mac is not plugged in (in contrast to the Tosh which
doesn't seem to lose clock time).

One more unrelated question...
I'm running OS X 10.3.8 and every time I start the Powerbook the Hard
Drive icon moves to a different place on the screen. Is there any way
of keeping it in the upper right hand corner where I prefer to have it,
other than at a random place upon boot up time?

Thanks,

Reconnecting on wake from sleep

Being a total newbie at these things, I'm rather proud of having got my
Airportless mini (running Panther) set up with a Netgear USB wireless
adapter and the Realtek driver. But the mini tends to drop the
connection when it wakes from sleep. (I expect it dropped the connection
when it *went* to sleep, but you know what I mean.) I can re-establish
the connection by physically disconnecting the adapter and reconnecting
it. But is there a way of doing this virtually, via the keyboard? I
mean, of course there is, but could someone please tell me what it is?
Thanks.
G5 Roars Out of Control

I'm running a PowerMac G5 under OS 10.3.9. The unit works normally
most of the time, but I will occasionally find it first thing in the
morning roaring full blast, with the hard drive and/or fan just
spinning continuously at full speed and making quite a racket.
Stopping it requires a reboot. If anyone has any counsel on solving
this problem, I'd be very much obliged. Email reply preferred, many
thanks in advance.
I have a client running 10.3.9 on a G5 iMac (no iSight). Every time
the iMac goes to sleep, it won't wake up. When you tap the spacebar
(or any other key or the mouse) the iMac shuts down instead of waking
up. It powers up fine, all the diagnostic LED's are lit. I did a
preference-ectomy, zapped PRAM repaired permissions, all to no avail.
I even created a new, virgin user account, which behaved exactly the
same. Has anyone run across this? Is there a solution short of erase
and install?

Many thanks!

G3 iMac and Battery

500 mhz G3 iMac. OSX 103.9. The date and time were not holding. I
checked the battery, although installed correctly, it was dead. I
replaced the battery with a new one that checked out at 3.6 volts. The
iMac refused to bootup! I scratched my head, and on a whim, I installed
the new battery opposite from the correct position. The computer now
starts and runs fine, but it doesn't hold the date and time again. The
+ and - battery terminal positions are displayed prominently on the
board holder. And as I said above, I know the old battery was installed
correctly.

Any ideas?

More about sleep problems?

I have more information on my sleep problem on my G4 running 10.4.9.

I try putting my computer to sleep in the following ways.

1. I select Sleep from the Apple menu.
2. I press the Power button momentarily on the front of the Mac.
3. From the log-in window during startup, I press the back arrow and select
Sleep

In every case, the cursor disappears, the keyboard stops functioning. I have
to reboot in order to get going again. The screen looks the same as before
the sleep attempt except for the lack of a cursor. My optical mouse stays
lit. The screen does not go into the low power mode. I still have to see if
the Energy Saver will kick in under those circumstances if I wait long
enough.

If I let the Energy Saver kick in, the screen goes dark. Waking up from that
state seems to work OK.

I have booted from a version of 10.3 on a different drive. The same problem
occurs.

I have used Disk Warrior and other techniques to purge my drives of errors.
I now get a clean bill of health. I have reinstalled 10.4.9. Nothing helps.
I will try removing everything from my startup folder.

I cannot see how reformatting my main drive and reinstalling the system will
help under these circumstances. Can it be a hardware failure somewhere?

What now?

little (e.g. to move a paper clip that happens to be under the
I have my iG5/10.3.9 set go to sleep when I hit the power button on the
back. To wake it, I have to click a mouse button- moving the mouse
doesn't do it.

And that's the way I like it.

Suddenly, over the past 24 hours, when I sent it to sleep it would start
to sleep, then wake up. A second sleep (still using the power button)
worked okay. But moving the mouse would wake the Mac straight away.
Nothing else had changed. Power saving prefs were unchanged.

After a small amount of faffing I remembered the Realities of Life;
restart. And it works fine again.

Isn't it nice how some tricks Just Work, every time?
i havn't read if anyone has resolved it. The problem is booting
between os9 and osx. You can boot/reboot into osx and os9 without any
problems. You can boot from osx to os9 without problem. but when you
boot from os9 to osx, the monitor remains black and you have to zap
the pram in order to get the machine to boot into osx. Even booting
from osx to a os9 cd requires that the machine have a pram zap before
the machine can be rebooted into X. I have tried two version of X.
Both Panther and Tiger. Same problem.
Bad Power Supply?

I just bought a "Yikes" G4. Price was the issue or I would have bought
something newer. I bought it from BetaMacs. The problem is that in
about 1 or 2 out of 20 boots it just shuts down after 5-10 seconds. I
have replaced the mobo battery, zapped the PRAM, booted from an install
disk and run Disk First Aid, and finally wiped the disk and did a clean
install of OS X 10.3

It still happens. Am I looking at the beginning of a Power Supply
failure? Is there something I've missed and not checked?

I've priced Power Supplies and they cost more than I paid for the
computer.

Unless I can resolve this soon I will have to return it under the 30
day warantee.

Any help appreciated.
I have an old Lombard with the stock 6 GB drive in it, and if I put a larger
drive in it I know it would be a serviceable machine for several things.

However, when I installed OS X (can't remember which version but I think it was
10.3), OS X did not see and would not charge the battery. The thing will not run
under battery power under OS X at all. However, the battery charges fine and the
computer will run on battery power under 9.2.2 which was already installed. What
gives with that?

The problem occurs even if no applications have been opened, so it does
not appear that any particular application is causing the problem.

I did upgrade from OS 10.3.2 to 10.3.9 a while back because that was
necessary to get Brother Printer MFC 9420CN to work. The problem dates
from about that time so may be related to the upgrade or the printer. I
disabled all options in the Brother ControlCenter but that didn't help.

Any comments much appreciated.
got the message that it cannot be installed on my powerBook G4 because
it is "not necessary."

Meanwhile, the problem continues.
What's the usual charge time 0->100% for a Lombard ?

Just switched on the G3 Lombard (400 mHz, 10.3.9.) after a month away
and the battery was completely flat. On the charger it is charging very
very slowly - after 4 hours it is at 65% and saying 2 hours to go to
full charge.

So is 6 hours from 0 to 100% a "normal" charge cycle time for this unit
in OSX - I don't remember it being so long under 9.2.2. a few months ago.

Cheers
Kernel Panic Sleep after update 10.4.3 (Sawtooth, G4 400 mhz)

Make an update from 10.3.9 to 10.4.3 (DVD) and 10.4.7 (software update)
then I got a Kernel Panic to enter in sleep: the screen turn black and the
the kernel panic message is shown ("you need to resart you computer..."
in several language).

Sawtooth, G4 400 mhz

Boot in single user. Reset Pram. Reset cuda. Restart from a newly installed 10.4.3. No change.

But if the mac is rebooted from the external firewire backup (10.3.9)
sleep work correctly !

10.4.3 installed (from the same DVD) on Mini 1.25 mhz work correctly: no sleep problem.
Is there anything wrong to install 10.4 on an old Sawtooth, G4 400 mhz ?

Any help will be appreciate.

Thank you.

"shutdown" does "restart"

400MHz G4 PowerMac (Gigabit Ethernet version). OSX 10.3.9. Been running
10.3.9 since shortly after it was released.

For perhaps a week now, I have been having the same problem. It happens
when I chose "Shutdown" from the menu while logged in and when I just
click on the "Shutdown" icon on the login screen. The computer does the
usual shutdown routine; it goes quiet for a few seconds; and it starts
booting up again.

This may have happened occasionally in the past. Then again, I may have
mouse-clicked on "Restart" rather than "Shutdown" on those occasions. It
is completely consistent now.

I can actually shut the computer down my holding down the power button
on the tower during the last of the quiet seconds and the start of the
boot-up.

I cannot tell if this is a hardware or software problem. Doing a "Repair
Permissions" with Disk Utility did not help. Running a full diagnostic
with TechTool did not help either.

How do I fix this problem?
I've had this problem under both 10.3.8 and 10.3.9, possibly earlier
releases too. Flat-panel iMac.

If I put it to sleep, it stays asleep. But very very often, if it goes
to sleep via Energy Saver preferences, it wakes up immediately. I don't
think it's a port thing -- I've had it sleep properly with everything
connected, and not sleep properly with everything detached.

Examples from System Log:

I've trashed Energy Plist to no avail. I've reset PRAM. Repaired
Anybody know what "Wake event 0020" is? Anybody have suggestions?
OS X Shutdown Freeze

I've had a persistent problem that the shutdown process stalls after
the Finder quits and all desktop icons are gone. This has persisted
through several versions of OS X (10.3, 10.4, currently at 10.4.6).
I've searched Apple's tech site and various forums for similar reports
or solutions to no avail.

I presume there is some background process that won't quit but I don't
know how to find out what it is to eliminate or update it. I welcome
any suggestions.
MacG5 dies instead of sleeps

Hi,

I'm having a problem withe sleep mode on my Mac. It is a G5 iMac OS X
version 10.3.9.

I always had it auto-sleep after about 15 or 20 minutes of no activity.
This worked fine until one day, it took a full reboot to bring it back
to life.

I found out that if I manually put it to sleep, it would immediately
wake up, but if I put it to sleep and came back a few hours later, it
required rebooting.

I ran the hardware check, and everything passes.

I reloaded OS X from the discs (just a reload, not a format and
reload). After this, when entering sleep mode, the light only blinks
once, then goes out - needing a reboot.

I updated again to 10.3.9. One blink and then dies.

I've been looking at the system console logs. I'm getting a bluetooth
Unsuccessful Handshake error, but I don't know if this is because the
system is going to sleep, or if something is wrong with the bluetooth.

I think this is the relevant part of the system.log.

<<<<<<<Startup complete is from the last reboot>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Airport Connection Yo-Yo (i.e. up/down)

Quick Summary: PowerBook's Airport connection goes up/down like a
yo-yo. Appears to be solved by resetting NVRAM. OS X 10.4.4 & 10.4.5
with all updates.

Hello All --

An intermittant problem with Airport connections going up and down
(like a yo-yo) has recently become much worse. The connection drops
out, all the bars go gray in the indicator. A connection seldom lasts
longer than an hour making it very difficult to work. This is on two
G4 PowerBooks, one 10.4.5 and one 10.3.9 with Linksys WRT54g access
points.

My recent testing:
- When the indicator shows no bars, MacStumbler will sometimes show
the access point, sometimes not. In one interval, I had MacStumbler
showing updated signal strength for a full two minutes during which
time I could not get the AP to show up in the Airport menu.
- Eventually, the access point shows up in the Airport menu again. I
can then select it and re-establish the connection. With no action on
my part, the mac will reconnect to the access point after several
minutes. This is the yo-yo behavior.
- When the indicator shows no bars, and repeated attempts to get bars
fail, the Intel iMac right beside me is having no problem with the same
access point.
- When the indicator shows no bars, cycling "Turn Airport OFF - Turn
Airport ON" brings back the connection with full function. After a
while, the problem repeats. Yo-yo.
- When the indicator shows no bars, the lights on the WRT54g access
point are normal.
- Connection drops appear to be more are likely when the PowerBook is
making less use of the connection... For example, when working locally
and occasionally getting a web page... than when using the connection
constantly (ssh terminal session). But, running a ping constantly
doesn't keep the connection up. Confusing.
- The problem has gotten bad enough that it's very hard to work on the
affected PowerBooks.

I had seen instances of this in the past, but only occasionally. I
sense that something is accumulating because I see a steady worsening
in both PowerBooks.

Both PowerBooks move from one building to another. There are Linksys
WRT54g's in both locations, setup identically and with the same SSID.
Don't know if this is related or not.

Reading MacFixit suggests reseting NVRAM... I'm trying this on one of
the Powerbooks. Seems to be working. How to reset NVRAM? See:

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=14449

Problem isolation... The problem appears...
- On two several-times-updated G4 PowerBooks, but not on a new Intel
iMac. Might be related to several-times-updated vs. a fresh install.
- On 10.4.5 and 10.3.9 (so it's not just one version)
- With Linksys WRT54g access points in two different locations (so
it's not local interference or a bad access point)
- On two different PowerBooks (so it's not a bad Airport card)
- With increasing frequency over time. Appears to be something that
accumulates. When you first see it, you just say "flaky wireless", but
later it's happening every 15 minutes, up/down, like a yo-yo.

I hope the NVRAM has fixed it. Any other ideas/experiences?
eject button at start up

I just started my PowerBook G4 (10.3.9) and held the CD eject button
down - silly me, I thought this would eject the CD which was in the
slot. It didn''t. Instead I heard a long tone, the "sleep" lamp
flashed several times, and then the machine started up - apparently as
normal.

I have looked in a number of places to find out what the key combination
does with no success, can anyone help me find out please?

Thanks

USB devices won't wake up

On a 10.3.9 iMac: after I wake up the Mac itself, USB devices often
don't wake up. This is true for a zip drive plugged directly into a USB
port and for a scanner connected via a USB hub. I often have to
unplug/replug to get the zip cartridge to mount or the scanner to be
recognized.

Why does this happen and what can I do about it?

Thanks,

Get rid of battery icon on iMac?

A while back I CCC'd 10.3.9 from my iBook to a fresh Panther install on
my iMac, but it gave me the battery icon in the task bar too! Anyway to
delete it?

Cheers
