Does anyone know the Radio Shack part number for a Mac PRAM battery? I
have a G4/800 desktop (Quicksilver 2002), but I believe itıs the same
battery theyıve used for numerous models over the years.

Thanks for your help.
Just checking; my son in law is thinking seriously about a Mac Pro OR an
iMac with a second monitor- for serious graphics work.

What's the situation on the Mac Pro fans? I know noise used to be a real
problem but I thought that had all been sorted out now. Has it?
Power Mac won't stay asleep

Running Mac OS X (10.2.6) on a Power Mac G4 1GHz (FW800) since February,
and suddenly since the other day I've had trouble keeping it asleep.

I'll put it to sleep, and come back some hours later and it's awake
again.

Any ideas what could be causing this?

Could it be an app? I tend to have a couple web browsers open, Mail,
iChat, iTunes, iCal, Address Book, Stickies, Suitcase, and Word open
pretty constantly. (But, then again, I always have, and the problem just
started.)
Powerless

Well, a spot of ebaying prolonged by a non-paying loon and -my- Power
Mac is now somebody else's Power Mac.

That's the effective end of two things for me: one, it's the end of the
PPC - we still have my daughter's G3 iMac but that's a learning rather
than constant use machine. Two - for the first time ever I effectively
don't have a desktop machine. There's a slight get-out here: we still
have the Mac Mini, but it's sitting under the TV acting as a set-top
box rather than as a main computer.

I've considered getting another desktop - 24" iMac perhaps, but I
really don't have the need at the moment. In fact I'm currently paring
kit down rather than bulking it up - even my beloved SE30 with CD-ROM
and ethernet adapter has gone to the den of vice and inequity that is
ebay, and I'm eyeing the Atari kit in the corner too. (C64 stays -
emulation is one thing, but a genuine SID is something else).

So there we go - it's the Intel Inside, laptop-only life for me at the
moment and I can see it staying that way for quite some time. Testament
to the new machines really in that I whilst I could never have
contemplated doing that with my PB 12"/dual 1.8 G5 set-up, as far as
coping with 'just' a MacBook Pro is concerned I'm seeing benefits
rather than trying to make allowances (though the machine does get
docked occasionally - external screen, keyboard and mouse plugged in
for a serious day's work).

Cheers,
Mac won't shut down

When I try to shut down (or restart) my Power Mac 6500/250 I get a
system error that says " Finder error 41" and a restart button. The
only way I can shut down is to pull the power.
I just recently had an odd happening in which a box of Kleenex fell from
the top of the monitor to my 6500's keyboard while I was hitting some
modifier keys. The computer instantly turned itself off, as if somebody
pulled the plug, or hit that little round button on the back. I'm not
sure what keys the box hit. I'm curious what key combination could do
this. The 6500 has Mac OS 8.6 installed on it.

Someone gave me a 6500/225 so I thought I'd fix it up to give to a very
poor student I know. Getting the date/time gremlins, I pulled out the
board to check out the battery. Never saw one like it. A big black
cubeish thing, roughly 1" square, says Rayovac 840, 4.5 Volts, and seems
to held in place with velcro(!) Could this be the wrong battery? I don't
even know where to get one.
Need to know polarity of RAYOVAC 4.5V battery (840,841)

Hi everyone,

I was testing my 4.5V RayOVac battery and I pulled the keyed 4-pin
connector off the wires to test it and forgot to check which way the
connector is keyed before I did. Darn it!

Now I don't know which way to put the wires back into the connector
plug. This is for the Tanzania MB but the MB header doesn't indicate
polarity. Of course normally that wouldn't matter since the connector
plug is keyed.

It's either:

RED Positive (+)
KEY
OPEN
BLACK Negative (-)

or

BLACK Negative (-)
KEY
OPEN
RED Positive (+)

I can always buy a new battery to find out but if anyone here knows I
would appreciate it. Thanks.

OS X Shutdown Freeze

I've had a persistent problem that the shutdown process stalls after
the Finder quits and all desktop icons are gone. This has persisted
through several versions of OS X (10.3, 10.4, currently at 10.4.6).
I've searched Apple's tech site and various forums for similar reports
or solutions to no avail.

I presume there is some background process that won't quit but I don't
know how to find out what it is to eliminate or update it. I welcome
any suggestions.

I have a Power Mac G4 (AGP) whose power supply has failed.

( The fan stopped, was replaced, it ran a few hours then stopped.
The battery was replaced and all the PMU CUDA stuff done.
There's no trickle voltage. -- It's dead. )

Questions: where does one get a replacement power supply?
Any other advice will be appreciated.
PCI USB 2.0 IOGear card & Sleep issues

I got it working with SLEEP but discovered an issue with the iPod.

I just installed a PCI USB 2.0 IOGear 5 port card in this G4 QuickSilver:

G4 933 2002 model
Tiger 10.4.2
1GB RAM
PCI SCSI card 2930CU

This G4 runs perfectly, and while I lost automatic DEEP SLEEP more than
a year ago (Jag or Panther not sure) it would manually go to SLEEP even
with the SCSI card.

On installing the IOGear card all seemed okay until I hooked up a 4thGen
iPod and even tho the iPod was dismounted (but still connected via the
IOGear USB 2.0 card) when I put the G4 to SLEEP manually the display
blanked but G4 remained on & running and did not SLEEP and worse, it
would not WAKE up & had to POWER Button 5 sec to get it OFF.

Subsequent experimenting it seems if iPod is connected mounted or
ejected but still connected via the PCI USB 2.0 IOGear card it will not
SLEEP & won't WAKE. Only way out is to POWER Button 5 sec route. Once
rebooted & removed iPod it WILL SLEEP & WAKE okay.

Obviously, I won't ever SLEEP this G4 with an iPod connected again.

Is this normal for IOGear or other PCI USB 2.0 cards?

=======
Main reason I put in the USB 2.0 card is I bought a 5th Gen iPod Video
for my daughter for Christmas (not opened yet or even checked it out
yet) and that iPod Video will sync ONLY via USB not Firewire as my older
4th Gen iPod would do.

Main music MP3 library is on this G4 mac so it seemed best to install a
USB 2.0 card in it.

I know some added hardware peripherals will not allow DEEP SLEEP. At
least this PCI card will work if no iPod is actually connected.

Thanks for comments in advance.
To sleep, perchance to dream? OS 10.2.8 - ay, There's the Rub

Hi all,
I recently updated to 10.2.8 (2 years late, but I tend to be cautious
:-/ ) on my dual 1GHz G4 tower with a 23" Apple display.
Now I cant get the machine to waken from sleep mode. The CPU fires up
but the screen remains blank and I have to restart the Mac.
Any fixes/patches out there?

Trusting my caution, I failed to make a backup of the OS before I
upgraded from 10.2.3. If no fixes are available, how can I downgrade
again? I have the original 10.2.1 CDs. Start again and upgrade to
10.2.3? Is it still available?

Thanks

Other ways to turn off a 6500 than special ->shut down?

Is there a key sequence that causes a PowerMac 6500 to power down
immediately as if one of the old fashioned switchs had been flipped?

Earlier today, I had a friend over. I had asked him to grab something
from a cabinet located in a hutch over my 6500's keyboard. At the time,
he made a comment about the rain and if it would stop, so I decided to
flip on the TV tuner card installed in the 6500 (main reason I keep it
around). I have the hotkey feature set up to require ALL the modifier
keys to turn on the TV in order to prevent accidental activation. I was
just starting to press down the keys when he knocked something down from
the cabinet that hit the reset/power button. I'm not sure which modifier
keys I had held down, but to my surprise the computer promptly turned
off instead of presenting me with a dialog box or rebooting. By turning
off, I mean it promptly turned off, do not display the shutdown dialog,
do not shut down properly. It was as if I flipped a power switch or
pulled the plug.

What keys did I hit to cause that, or was it some kind of fluke? I'd
rather not experiment due to the wear/tear on the old power suppily and
the improper shutdowns that would result if I replicate it, but it would
be nice to know.

Mac not sleeping

My Mac seems to sleep ok manually, but not via Energy Saver. at any
rate, the fan seems to be on (with screen black) if I leave the machine
unused for an hour or two.

I'm pretty sure I know the reason. I stream music to my hifi using a
Squeezebox (wireless hardware) and SlimServer. As SlimServer is a
server, I assume that Energy Saver does not want to sleep the machine if
SlimServer is active.

I'm wondering if there is any third-party software that will ensure the
Mac sleeps when I am not using it. As far as I an concerned, I would be
happy to wake the machine manually when I need to stream music.
Hi

My Power Mac G4 once it is on it wont shut down. When you click
shutdown, it shutsdown and reboots straight away. So I leave my finger
on the power button to turn it off bu then the MAC doesnt start unless
I i plug the power cord wait a bit and then replug it again.

I am going mad, anyone out there knows why this is happening?? It would
make y life a lot easier.

Thank you on advance,
G4 Quicksilver Randomly Losing Power :-(

> >
> > cardinal wrote:
> > >
> > > I have a 800MHz Quicksilver running OS X 10.2 that is randomly
> > > powering down. Doesn't seem to be app related as it's happened in lots
> > > of different apps and many times when the screen saver is running.
> > >
> > > Seems to happen less when I have the case open which leads me to
> > > believe that it *may* be heat related, but at this point that is just
> > > a guess.
> > >
> > > Has anyone seen or heard of this problem before? It's driving me nuts
> > > :-)

The Quicksilver G4 has a CPU cooling arrangement that is VERY vulnerable
to dust. My friend had one, started giving her problems after a few
weeks. It kept getting worse and worse until she just bought a new
one. After several people pronounced the MoBo on her Quicksilver as
being dead, it made it's way to me, I was going to mod the case for
other purposes.

All I had to do to revive this "dead" Mac was to clean out the huge
accumulation of dust in between the CPU heatsink and the heat sink fan.
The design of the CPU cooling system draws in fresh air from outside the
case and blows it over the CPU heatsink. This air is not filtered in
any way. At the area of the interface between the fan and the heatsink,
dust coming in through the fan will tend to accumulate between the
heatsink fins, cutting off airflow to the heatsink. Remember that an
overheated CPU tends to generate seemingly random errors.
Need PCI FireWire Card to replace dead onboard firewire in quicksilver G4 - want deep sleep and no file corruption

I've got a Quicksilver G4 Running OS 10.3.4 that recently lost it's onboard
Firewire. So it's time to add it back in with a PCI card.

I started reading about deep sleep being inhibited by add in PCI firewire
cards.
http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/firewire/fw_usb_card_deep_sleep.html
and file corruption with USB/Firewire PCI Combo Cards
http://www.macintouch.com/pcicombo.html

I definitely want to preserve the ability of my computer to enter into deep
sleep, and I don't much like the idea of data corruption resulting from
certain combos of USB and Firewire devices being plugged into the card
simultaneously. That sorta defeats the purpose of the combo card.

Well now I've read so many problem reports that my head is spinning. I
figure some of the user feedback (which is mostly from 2003 and earlier in
2004) on macintouch and xlr8yourmac might be specific to each individual
funky system, and furthermore might be outdated by OS/driver/firmware
patches. Hopefully some of these problems have indeed been fixed, because
after all this reading, I'm feeling like I'm trying to choose the "least
broken card" whereas I'd like to select one that "just works".

So I'm definitely looking for recommendations for a trouble free PCI
FireWire or FireWire / USB2.0 combo card that doesn't interfere with deep
sleep, corrupt your data, or otherwise make anything blow up. If you've got
a recommendation, feel free to stop reading right now and reply to the
group.

Here is what I've gathered and distilled from reading I've done so far.

1) The macally FH2-UF24 USB2.0 / Firewire PCI Combo Card.
http://www.macally.com.au/product_info.php?cPath=2&products_id=51
Most of the reports on xlr8yourmac say it will let the computer go to deep
sleep when nothing is attached. Macally acknowledges deep sleep problems on
their support page
http://www.macally.com/techsupport/faq/faq_pci_sleep_issue.html
There are reports of sleep/wake/freeze problems with certain devices
attached and the file corruption issue (which I see no mention of on the
macally site) is of even greater concern
http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/firewire/fw_usb_card_deep_sleep.html#corruption
http://www.macintouch.com/pcicombo.html
Are any of these issues fixed? Old news yet?
Also, the USB 2.0 combo card doesn't even appear on the US website
http://www.macally.com/products.html
All I see there is the FH-UF2 1.x combo card. There are many more flavors
of PCI cards on the European site. What's the deal with that?

2) Orange Micro OrangeLink+ USB 2.0/Firewire
There is one deep sleep complaint from a guy running the card in a computer
with an OWC Mercury Extreme 1.4Ghz on OS 10.2.8.
http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/firewire/fw_usb_card_deep_sleep.html
I'd need to read/hear some positive feedback before assuming it will sleep
nicely in my quicksilver.

3) Sonnet Tango 2.0 FireWire/USB 2.0
http://sonnettech.com/product/tango_2.html
or the Allegro FW400 http://sonnettech.com/product/allegro400.html
Either one would be fine by me if it played nice with my quicksilver running
10.3.4 and go to deep sleep, but I'm dubious that either one fits the bill
considering the legit looking copy of "Sonnet eNews - March 2004" I turned
up in a Google search.
http://www.tegjpn.net/USeNews.htm - Not that I know anything about this
site, but I can't see why anyone would forge an eNews letter, so I assume
this is legit.
Sonnet eNews - March 2004
Tech Tip - Mac OS X 10.3.x and Deep Sleep

Symptom: After I updated my system software to Mac OS X 10.3.x with a PCI
adapter card installed, or after installing a PCI adapter card into a system
that was already running Mac OS X 10.3.x, the computer will not go all the
way to Deep Sleep.

Issue: When the Mac OS version 10.3.x cannot completely identify a card
running on the PCI bus, it will only put the machine into a so called "doze
mode," the machine is using less power, however the fans continue to run.
This is the power management part of the Mac OS, and prevents malfunctions
of the computer or peripherals that might result from sudden loss of power
to the PCI bus. This is not a defect in either the Mac OS nor in the PCI
card, as this behavior is prescribed by the specifications of sleep mode.

Solution: This is an issue that is not specific to Sonnet's PCI adapter
cards, however it has been seen across a wide range of third party PCI
cards. While Apple has not made any statement regarding future versions of
OS X that will recognize a wider range of PCI cards, it is hoped that this
will be addressed over time.

4) Adaptec FireConnect 4300:
http://www.adaptec.com/worldwide/product/proddetail.html?sess=no&language=English+US&prodkey=AFW-4300&cat=%2fTechnology%2fFireWire-1394%2fFireWire-1394+Adapters

From Adaptec's ASK Knowledgebase, Answer ID 4059 answers the following:
"After installing the FireConnect 4300 adapter in a Mac running Mac OS X
10.2 (Jaguar), the system will no longer come back from the Sleep. Is the
FireConnect 4300 compatible with the Sleep function in Mac OS X?"

"Since the FireConnect 4300 uses standard, embedded 1394/FireWire drivers in
Mac OS X, it should be compatible with Sleep.
If you encounter errors while trying to recover from Sleep, then try
removing all 1394/FireWire devices from the FireConnect adapter and test
Sleep once more. If the system recovers from the Sleep function in the Mac,
then try to isolate the issue to a device by re-attaching them to the
adapter one-by-one."

After reading the Sonnet eNews, I'm dubious that the Adaptec Card does any
better in 10.3.x. Can anyone give me user feedback here?

So.... Those were just a few cards that I had read *some* positive reports
about (as opposed to the 100% negative stuff I read about some keyspan
cards, which sound like they are a disaster in terms of sleeping the
computer into a coma.)

I'll consider any card that gives me working firewire ports again and
preserves my functioning deep sleep mode. Some other cards I spotted in the
massive confusion of reports I've read through:

Fire Wire Depot had the following to say at
http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/firewire/fw_usb_card_deep_sleep.html
With all of the conversations going on in various threads online, we have
determined after doing some testing that the following FireWire Depot PCI
host adapters can go into deep sleep:
1) IOI-4601 dual channel PCI
2) IOI-4602 dual channel PCI
3) U2FW-PCI01 FireWire/USB2 combo PCI

but that was in regards to OS 10.2.8. No clue what the verdict is in
10.3.x.

A 9/12/2003 post to
http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/firewire/fw_usb_card_deep_sleep.html gives me
some hope that this product
http://www.firewiredirect.com/firewire/products/adapters_pcicombo.shtml at
FireWire Direct might stand a chance of satisfying my lofty goals of deep
sleep in 10.3.x, but once again, I'm dubious after reading that Sonnet eNews
report about.

People talking about combo cards that avoid the apparent data corruption
problem of the Macally USB/Firewire combo, pointed to these two
http://www.smartdisk.com/Products/PCICards/PCICards.asp
http://www.ratocsystems.com/english/products/subpages/pcifu2.html praising
them for having Molex connectors on the PCI cards that supply direct power
independently of the PCI bus. I've got no clue if the corruption issue
is/was actually power related, but I'd certainly be happy to grab either one
of these two cards if I hear back some 10.3.x deep sleep success stories
with one of them.

No clue how these IOGEAR cards stack up but they offer a straight firewire
card and a combo card as well
http://iogear.com/main.php?loc=productcategory&category=firewire&category_id=43
Yet another option.

Thanks in advance everyone for any feedback you can offer,
Problems After Power Outage...

We had a power outage this AM and, afterward, the date on my Quicksilver
was set to 12/31/69. All the warning lights on my printer were also
going off though that stopped after I turned it off and then on again.
Is that normal? I've ever had that happen after an outage before.

Sleep & Monitor Problem

If I set my energy saver to sleep my system or select "sleep" before
going to bed at night, it puts everything to sleep the way it should,
including parking all of my 2 FW and 2 SCSI drives (though I rarely have
them all on). However, in sleep mode, my monitor (Mitsubishi Diamond
Pro 900u) makes this barely audible but high-pitched squealing noise
that does not sound healthy. I have no other problems with my monitor.
As a consequence, I prefer to turn my monitor off at night and sleep the
rest of the system.

But if I turn my monitor off, then the rest of the system will either
wake up or will not sleep at all (even if the energy saver is set to
make it sleep in five minutes or whatever). The only way I can sleep
the system is to power off the monitor and then use the power button on
the computer to make it sleep. I guess I don't understand why the
system will not sleep after the monitor is powered off.

Any ideas on how I can get my system to sleep after powering off the
monitor? Quicksilver with OS 10.3.1.

Help! External drives dismount themselves upon sleep

Greetings!

I bought a new 250 GB hard drive and installed it in my Quicksilver G4
867, and I took the opportunity to do a fresh installation of the system
over the weekend, upgraded this morning to 10.2.8 (no problems with
that). Starting this weekend (so still under 10.2.6) and continuing
under 10.2.8 I have two external drives, one Firewire one USB 2.0 (I
have a PCI card for this installed) that seem to dismount themselves
when the system goes to sleep. And it gives me that irritating error
message in the Finder about a missing volume. I have the preferences on
Energy Saver set so that hard drives do not try to go to sleep whenever
possible, although the system sleeps after 15 minutes. I can get the
drives remounted by running Disk Utility *twice* (the first time it
doesn't usually see any drives, internal or external; the second time it
recognizes the external drives in question and they remount.

Actually, I'm not sure this is related, but I have also had two failures
of the entire system to awake from extended sleep (such as overnight)
since the reinstallation of the system, none yet since upgrading to
10.2.8. These required a hard restart, and after one of them I got a
kernel panic early in the startup process (it started right up after
that).

This is pretty irritating. Any suggestions as to why it might be
happening and how I might be able to stop it?

Thanks in advance!
