Odd sleep behaviour on MacPro

I have X windows running on the Mac. Windows come from other systems,
displayed on the mac (as well as some local xterms).

Usually, when the Mac goes to sleep, the displays go off, but the
ethernet remains on and enough of the Mac remains awake to maintain the
remote x window connections.

But every now and then (I think it is after a reboot), going to sleep
results in the ethernet going off which causes all the remote X windows
to timeout and be lost.

Energy saver is currently set to:

Computer sleeps: 1 hour
Display Sleep: 12 minutes

Put the hard disk to sleep: yes
Wake for Ethernet network access: no
Allow power button to put computer to sleep: yes
Start up automatically adter a power failure: YES

Note the later: after a power failure where the mac was asleep, it does
not power back on automatically.

I haven't changed those settings in ages.

I suspect some application, possibly Transmission (for torrents), does
something to the mac to prevent it from ever going to sleep completely
and this survives after Transmission has quit but is not reflected in
the System sesstings.

is this possible ?

Is my only option to set the "Computer Sleep" to "Never" ? is there a
"half asleep" setting where background stuff continues, but GUI stuff is
suspended ?
The wording would tend to indicate that even with transmission running,
it would still go to sleep if there were no active transfers. Perhaps
the setting is so strong that it survives not only the lack of active
transfers, but the quitting of the application :-)

WakeOnLAN across WAN

Anyone have any experience of Wake-on-LAN? I can get it to work on the LAN,
but can't get it to work across the WAN to wake my father's computer.

I'm running the WakeOnLan program; I'm using the IP address of his router[1],
and the MAC address of his iMac. But it doesn't wake up.

(I've set "Wake for Ethernet network administrator access" on his machine,
obviously.)

Googling around, I found this:

"If you wish to use Wake On Lan over the internet you will need to set up
your destination firewall/router to allow "Subnet Directed Broadcasts". Most
routers and firewalls disable this option by default."

Could this be the problem? Can anyone help as to where this option is on a
Netgear DG834G?

Cheers,
What to Do With Battery That Just Arrived

I have a PowerBook G4 15" aluminum that is a bit over four years ago. About
a week and a half ago, the battery began to appear to act a little erratically
(this is the second battery that I've had) according to coconutBattery, with
capacity dropping to about 75%. Concerned that the battery was about to die
on me, I ordered another battery from Apple, which arrived today.

However, the situation with the battery appeared to stabilize, and the battery
is no longer showing signs of impending doom. My question is: with the new
battery, would it degrade if I let it sit in the box for a while before
starting to use it? Or should I wait until the current battery get a little
worse before starting to use the new one?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Not sure how I did this, but as of yesterday, when my MBP wakes from
sleep it no longer defaults the wireless network. I have to select
one manually from the AirPort menu icon. Before this, my local AirPort
network would be selected automatically on wake-up.

The AirPort configuration in the Network system preference still says
'By default, join <A specific network>', my preferred network is still
listed as the one to join, and my login keychain still has the right WPA
password. Afaik I didn't make any network configuration or keychain
changes of any kind.

How can I get the old behavior back?

[ANN] Power Manager 3.5 - Reduce Your Mac's Energy Costs

DssW, the leading developer of Mac energy saving software, today
announced the launch of Power Manager 3.5 for Mac OS X. The new version
of Power Manager makes energy saving easy. Power Manager 3.5 introduces
a Schedule Assistant to help users start saving immediately; a status
menu that provides quick access to upcoming events; and AppleScript,
Automator, and UNIX scripting to give advanced users greater control
over their schedule.

For more information about Power Manager visit
<http://www.dssw.co.uk/powermanager/>

Download the free 30 day demonstration
<http://www.dssw.co.uk/powermanager/dsswpowermanager.dmg.zip>

The status menu gives users easy access to their schedule. It takes
advantage of new flexible scheduling in Power Manager 3.5, allowing
users to cancel or delay any pending event with a single click. The
status menu features a new Quick Schedule function, the fastest way to
schedule one-off events.

Power Manger 3.5 has some great new features for administrators and
advanced users. "Scheduling your Mac has never been so easy," said
Graham Miln, DssW's director. "The new engine puts the full capabilities
of Power Manager in the hands of our users." Applescript, Automator, and
UNIX scripting, allows administrators to control and customise Power
Manager 3.5 to meet the individual needs of their organisation. Security
is now delegated to the Mac OS X authentication services, providing
better integration of Power Manager 3.5 with existing solutions.

The Power Manager System Preference features an improved interface,
allowing users to name events in their schedule; and undo support,
giving users the freedom to experiment. The System Preference is home to
the Schedule Assistant. The Schedule Assistant helps users get started
with Power Manager 3.5 by creating a customised schedule to suit their
lifestyle.

Other new features include launchd support, improved notification
dialogs, and software update checks.

Power Manager helps users save energy by automating their Macs. Users
can schedule their Macs to start up or wake, shut down, restart, log
out, switch to the login window, and sleep.

Whether you have one Mac or 10,000, Power Manager makes saving energy
simple.

Pricing and Availability

Power Manager is available today through the DssW web site
<http://www.dssw.co.uk/powermanager/>, for EUR20. Volume discounts for
+100 Macs are available. System requirements are Mac OS X 10.3.9 or
later.

Version 3.5 is free for registered users of Power Manager 3.
"Wake for Ethernet Network Administrator Access"? (how to use)

"Wake for Ethernet Network Administrator Access"

Set by a box in the Energy Control preferences.
(options tab)

Anyone know how to get this to work?

I tried it with an Ethernet Timbuktu network, but no success.

Two Macs connected via Ethernet cable, everything works okay as long as
both Macs stayed awake.

Put one Mac to sleep, then can't rouse it from sleep from the other Mac,
no matter what I do.

It is necessary to send a "Wake on LAN" packet somehow, but can't find
out how to do that, despite searching Google.
"shutdown" does "restart"

400MHz G4 PowerMac (Gigabit Ethernet version). OSX 10.3.9. Been running
10.3.9 since shortly after it was released.

For perhaps a week now, I have been having the same problem. It happens
when I chose "Shutdown" from the menu while logged in and when I just
click on the "Shutdown" icon on the login screen. The computer does the
usual shutdown routine; it goes quiet for a few seconds; and it starts
booting up again.

This may have happened occasionally in the past. Then again, I may have
mouse-clicked on "Restart" rather than "Shutdown" on those occasions. It
is completely consistent now.

I can actually shut the computer down my holding down the power button
on the tower during the last of the quiet seconds and the start of the
boot-up.

I cannot tell if this is a hardware or software problem. Doing a "Repair
Permissions" with Disk Utility did not help. Running a full diagnostic
with TechTool did not help either.

How do I fix this problem?
Mac Mini PPC will not sleep

Hi.
1stly, I am a switcher. I love my MAC, it is so refreshing coming home
and using my MAC after a day in my Windows centric job as a Sys
Engineer.

But I have a problem with my MAC now not sleeping by its self. I can
put it to sleep manually though. It used to and I can not think of any
thing I did to stop it.

I have tried deleting the power prefs plist. Resetting the NVRam at
startup Option+Command+P+R ( I think, but it did reset.)

I have no attached printers. Or anything USB except my Apple KB and MS
mouse.

It does not sleep for another limited account I have setup either.

How do I track this down?
Thanks Scotty
NFS mounts after sleep problem.

I have been experiencing an intermittent problem with an NFS mount that
doesn't always work after waking a sleeping G4. Most of the time the
mount works after a sleep but sometimes the system log shows the
following and never manages to remount. A reboot fixes the problem:

> Jul 10 08:38:00 g4/g4 configd[37]: posting notification com.apple.system.config.network_change

10.7.11.1:/home on /private/var/automount/home

and the mount is mounted with the following options:

-P (allow all ports, not just privileged)
-3 (NFS v3)
-r=32768
-w=32768 (read and write size)
-T (NFS over TCP)

Unfortunately the Linux server that holds the mount shows no errors and
I would be surprised if there were a problem at that end since rebooting
the Mac fixes the problem.

I am also curious as to whether the mac supports non-automounted/static
mounts? Automount seems more effort than it is worth especially for
mounts that should never expire.

Any clues greatfully received.

I've had this problem under both 10.3.8 and 10.3.9, possibly earlier
releases too. Flat-panel iMac.

If I put it to sleep, it stays asleep. But very very often, if it goes
to sleep via Energy Saver preferences, it wakes up immediately. I don't
think it's a port thing -- I've had it sleep properly with everything
connected, and not sleep properly with everything detached.

Examples from System Log:

I've trashed Energy Plist to no avail. I've reset PRAM. Repaired
Anybody know what "Wake event 0020" is? Anybody have suggestions?
Hi,

My Logitech Cordless Mouse sometimes does not work any more after the
laptop waking up from sleep. I need to unplug/replug its USB receiver
for the mouse to work again.
PowerBook G4/667 Gigabit Ethernet
OS X.4.6, I think it started behaving like this with X.3
Logitech Control Center version 2.0, was already problematic with 1.x
OS X Shutdown Freeze

I've had a persistent problem that the shutdown process stalls after
the Finder quits and all desktop icons are gone. This has persisted
through several versions of OS X (10.3, 10.4, currently at 10.4.6).
I've searched Apple's tech site and various forums for similar reports
or solutions to no avail.

I presume there is some background process that won't quit but I don't
know how to find out what it is to eliminate or update it. I welcome
any suggestions.
Does Apple Remote Desktop work when monitor is asleep?

Does Apple Remote Desktop work when monitor is asleep? I set up a
router and a Mac Mini at a location far from home. The Mini is running
OSX 10.4 and ARD3 with VNC. While still at that location, I verified
that the Mini accepted VNC connections from outside the router (I set
up port forwarding on the router, of course, and VNC-ed into it from
outside the router). Now that I'm back home I can no longer VNC into
the Mac. It says "connection failed." The only thing I can think of is
that on the Mini the energy saver feature turned off the monitor. Is
there any chance that this would affect ARD or VNC?

Thanks.
to wake them up with magic packets -- one works, the other doesn't. As
far as I can tell, I've configured all the relevant settings the same
(i.e., checked "wake on network administrative access," made sure
tcp/ip and appletalk are set to use Ethernet, etc.).

The 733MHz G4 always wakes up when I send it the magic packet (I'm
using wol.exe from http://www.gammadyne.com/cmdline.htm on a windows
machine). The Dual 1-GHz G4 does not wake up if I've gone to sleep
from OS 9.2.2, but it DOES wake up if I've gone to sleep from OSX
10.2.8, so that seems to rule out that the network card isn't
compatible or that there are connection or hardware problems.

Are there other settings that I should be checking are identical? Or
does anyone know of certain configurations or extensions that prevent
wake-on-lan?

Background: I am trying to wake the machines at night for a daily
backup. Users often run them in OS9 when they need to run certain
apps. I thought about that maybe these apps are leaving files open,
etc., but I've tried going to sleep right after a clean boot and still
can't wake it up. In all cases, tapping the mouse or the keyboard
wakes the computer up fine.

Other info that may or may not be relevant: both machines have DAVE
filesharing software, v.4.1. For everything I could think to check,
the DAVE settings are configured identically (except for the name, of
course). Also, both machines are configured for DHCP and the "DHCP
Client ID" setting is blank. Both are getting registered on the DHCP
server with the correct MAC address.

Any help or ideas are greatly appreciated.
Thanks much!

Cpu Sleep is ending my internet connection?

I have a dsl internet connection. Normally when I am connected to the
internet, and my computer goes to sleep, the internet will still be
connected. But all of a sudden today, when ever I leave my computer
idle and it falls asleep, it disconnects me from the internet. Does
anyone know what might have set this off? And is there a way to correct
this? My energy settings are the Same as usual. Which is to sleep after
1 minute of inactivity.

Airport Connection Yo-Yo (i.e. up/down)

Quick Summary: PowerBook's Airport connection goes up/down like a
yo-yo. Appears to be solved by resetting NVRAM. OS X 10.4.4 & 10.4.5
with all updates.

Hello All --

An intermittant problem with Airport connections going up and down
(like a yo-yo) has recently become much worse. The connection drops
out, all the bars go gray in the indicator. A connection seldom lasts
longer than an hour making it very difficult to work. This is on two
G4 PowerBooks, one 10.4.5 and one 10.3.9 with Linksys WRT54g access
points.

My recent testing:
- When the indicator shows no bars, MacStumbler will sometimes show
the access point, sometimes not. In one interval, I had MacStumbler
showing updated signal strength for a full two minutes during which
time I could not get the AP to show up in the Airport menu.
- Eventually, the access point shows up in the Airport menu again. I
can then select it and re-establish the connection. With no action on
my part, the mac will reconnect to the access point after several
minutes. This is the yo-yo behavior.
- When the indicator shows no bars, and repeated attempts to get bars
fail, the Intel iMac right beside me is having no problem with the same
access point.
- When the indicator shows no bars, cycling "Turn Airport OFF - Turn
Airport ON" brings back the connection with full function. After a
while, the problem repeats. Yo-yo.
- When the indicator shows no bars, the lights on the WRT54g access
point are normal.
- Connection drops appear to be more are likely when the PowerBook is
making less use of the connection... For example, when working locally
and occasionally getting a web page... than when using the connection
constantly (ssh terminal session). But, running a ping constantly
doesn't keep the connection up. Confusing.
- The problem has gotten bad enough that it's very hard to work on the
affected PowerBooks.

I had seen instances of this in the past, but only occasionally. I
sense that something is accumulating because I see a steady worsening
in both PowerBooks.

Both PowerBooks move from one building to another. There are Linksys
WRT54g's in both locations, setup identically and with the same SSID.
Don't know if this is related or not.

Reading MacFixit suggests reseting NVRAM... I'm trying this on one of
the Powerbooks. Seems to be working. How to reset NVRAM? See:

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=14449

Problem isolation... The problem appears...
- On two several-times-updated G4 PowerBooks, but not on a new Intel
iMac. Might be related to several-times-updated vs. a fresh install.
- On 10.4.5 and 10.3.9 (so it's not just one version)
- With Linksys WRT54g access points in two different locations (so
it's not local interference or a bad access point)
- On two different PowerBooks (so it's not a bad Airport card)
- With increasing frequency over time. Appears to be something that
accumulates. When you first see it, you just say "flaky wireless", but
later it's happening every 15 minutes, up/down, like a yo-yo.

I hope the NVRAM has fixed it. Any other ideas/experiences?
Airport in battery woes

Likewise an older poster here (Jan 2006 it seems) I have a very very
odd problem with my iBook. When at home, with my horrible d-link di-514
wireless router, if I disconnect the power source from my iBook, data
stops transfering between my iBook and the router suddenly, the
connection is not dropped though, only no data comes or goes... if I
just plug in the iBook back, without touching or moving it, the data
stream resumes working!!!

I do not have a mac store nearby, so I can't visit one to check. Any
suggestions please?

Wakeing my iBook G4 from sleep, so I can wake with a radio stream and coffee. Advice please.

Hello from New Zealand. I am having two problems and request your kind
help.

1. I would like my wireless iBook to wake at say 8am in the morning from
"sleep" and start playing a windows media player (for OSX) streaming radio
station. Can this be done? I wondered about the unix "at" command but am
not sure how to implement this.

2. When I rotate a jpg in Preview then save it, the finder window
_fails_ to show the rotation in the thumbnail icon in the finder window.
Is there anyway I can get the finder to draw the correct thumbnail/icon in
its rotated form?

Thanks for you generous advice.

OS X broadband dropping out during sleep mode

Hello Mac users,

I am looking for some help with a friends' PC. Her new broadband
connection drops out overnight - while the Mac is in sleep mode, then
won't connect automatically the next morning as it wakes up. It seems
to think it's still connected. Only a restart on the mac will solve
this.

I've figured out it's some kind of idle timeout issue. See the log
below:

Wed Feb 15 15:18:12 2006 : ipcp: up
Wed Feb 15 15:18:12 2006 : local IP address 80.41.231.7
[LCP TermReq id=0x2 "User request"]
Wed Feb 15 15:23:47 2006 : rcvd [LCP TermAck id=0x2] Wed Feb 15
15:23:47 2006 : Connection terminated.
Wed Feb 15 15:23:47 2006 : Connect time 5.7 minutes.
Wed Feb 15 15:23:47 2006 : Sent 15515 bytes, received 51892 bytes. Wed
Feb 15 15:23:48 2006 : Serial link disconnected.

I understand signal 15 is one way unix can force termination of a
process. Is there some way to keep the modem connection alive without
completely disabling power saving? Tiscali refuse to give mac support -
although they seemed happy to sell her this broadband solution for her
mac?!?

Tiscali 1Mb broadband
Speedtouch 330 USB
Applemac with OS X

Any suggestions hints or tips are welcome.

Many thanks in advance

APC UPS logging/monitoring supply/battery voltage

I just purchased an APC UPS which I will probably have to send back.
Despite my best efforts, quizzing the supplier, it appears the UPS and
its supplied software has no options to monitor and log the supply side
voltage.

A few years ago I interfaced several APC UPS' to Sun Solaris servers.
The powerchute software had a quite useful logging function.

Is anybody able to advise which UPS and software combination offers the
best logging.monitoring solution for Mac OS.

iBook G4 WiFi problems when on battery

Hardware: iBook g4 800mhz w/AirPort Extreme
Software: OS X 10.4 (latest updates)

This is a weird issue that started recently (but can't be attributed to
a particular OS update or other event):

WiFi becomes almost unusable when on battery power. I've checked
system preferences and set everything up to maximize performance while
on battery power. Still no dice. The connection strength/quality
still looks good and a ping doesn't reflect any major connection
problems. Yet when browsing any site the performance is horrible. It
tightens right back up if I plug into AC power.

I don't even know where to start looking. Software? Hardware?
Unfortunately I do not have a spare AirPort card to try. Can anybody
help me out here?

Thanks,
Tiger won't shut down or restart

Hi everyone,

ever since I upgraded to Tiger I can't shut down or restart my system
any more. When I start shut down, everything seems to go smoothly at
first. But then, when at last the screen only shows the blue background
image, disk activity dies down and the system should actually shut
down, it just sits there and won't turn itself off. I have to hold the
power button in the back of the Mac down for several seconds to turn it
off. Then, when the system starts up the next time it reports that the
system hasn't been shut down correctly.

This is a G4 iMac from beginning 2002 which I have been upgrading to
Tiger when it came out. The various updates (including the latest,
10.4.4) didn't make the error go away, either.

The system.log file lists a couple of -1712 errors:

Jan 12 19:30:43 Marcus-Henneckes-Computer loginwindow[72]:
sendQuitEventToApp (Archive Assistant Scheduler): AESendMessage
returned error -1712
Jan 12 19:30:44 Marcus-Henneckes-Computer loginwindow[72]:
sendQuitEventToApp (Transport Monitor): AESendMessage returned error
-1712
Jan 12 19:30:44 Marcus-Henneckes-Computer loginwindow[72]:
sendQuitEventToApp (Palm Desktop Background): AESendMessage returned
error -1712
Jan 12 19:30:45 Marcus-Henneckes-Computer loginwindow[72]:
sendQuitEventToApp (PopChar X): AESendMessage returned error -1712
Jan 12 19:30:46 Marcus-Henneckes-Computer loginwindow[72]:
sendQuitEventToApp (IOXperts Device Monitor): AESendMessage returned
error -1712

At least PopChar X does seem to quit though as its little 'P' icon in
the corner of the screen disappears. Furthermore, there are a whole
bunch of error messages from sniffer:

Jan 12 19:30:50 Marcus-Henneckes-Computer mdimportserver[16860]:
sniffer can't check in... 1102

Does anybody have an idea how I should proceed from here? What could be
the cause or how could I find out? How could I remedy the problem?

Thanks in advance for any help!

WTF? Can't shut down/restart

I've got a 733/G4 with OS X 10.4.3 running, and recently it won't shut
down or restart without physically pressing the restart button. All
the apps shut down, but the desktop picture stays and nothing more
happens - even leaving it overnight! The cursor remains visible and is
able to be moved normally, but no keys do anything. The ONLY thing I
have been able to determine is that if I leave it long enough, the
system doesn't go through it's disk verification procedure on startup
as it does when there is an unexpected crash/power failure. This is a
recent development, but I can't pin it down to anything that I have
done/installed lately. <grrr> - In the "olden days" I would have been
able to track this down with Conflict Catcher easily enough, but I
don't suppose tha there's anything like that for OSX. I've tried
restarting after a shift-boot as well and there's no difference.
Terminal and Console, of course, shut down when the other apps do, so
it's no help, as it's beyond that point that things are hanging.

Not a clueless n00b here, been on Appls/Macs since the early Apple ][+
days, and speak Unix as a second language. Anyone have any
suggestions, clues, hints, or anything else? Are there any logs
somewhere that I don't know about that would give me the point where
it's hanging?

sleep from terminal

I know of an app called 'sleepnow' that does this, but is there a
built-in shell command to make the computer sleep from terminal? Jag and
Panther.

Cheers.
Lost ability to soft shutdown/restart

Does aanyone know of anything I can do to restore my ability to allow
me to force a shutdown/restart on my iMac G4 1.25 running Tiger? I lost
the ability months ago (the OS kills all apps but sits at a solid
colour background,no dock or menu forever).
Many thanks for any expertise provided....
MacOS X: recorded time when going to sleep?

Is there a way under MacOS X to tell when the computer last went to sleep?

The 'uptime' shell command shows how long the system has been up
(including time sleeping, it seems).

And /var/log/system.log records the time of each "System Wake" (but it
records "System Sleep" with the actual wakeup time, not the
going-to-sleep time).
