Clamshell iBook Run Without Battery
-

Can anyone here with a clamshell iBook tell me if the machine will run with the battery removed? I'm working on a relative's 366Mhz machine, and the amber light goes on when you plug in the power adapter, but the machine will not boot. I have narrowed the problem down to most likely a bad battery pack, or a hosed motherboard (coffee). If the battery pack on this model is removed, is the machine still supposed to run?
TIA

Er, it would have been pretty easy to just test this out, no?
It'll run, but you may want to put some dead weight in place of the battery. Without the battery it'll tend to fall over backwards, from not having enough ballast to keep it upright.

Not when you're trying to identify a problem, as Steve is.

It is my understanding that most Apple laptops will start up without a battery installed, as long as a power adapter is installed. My unit does not. So either it is not supposed to, or there is something else wrong with the unit. So I would like to know if a working clamshell will start up if the battery is removed, but plugged into a power adapter. Anyone with a working unit care to test my theory?

Yes, it should startup without a battery installed, and just the Power Adapter, plugged in. You may be fighting a Dead Pram Battery. That would keep the ibook from starting.......

Also, do you actually have a clamshell 366Mhz to physically test, or are you just saying that every Apple laptop that you have owned has started from the PA?

FWIW, I have a neighbor who had a clamshell iBook that will start up when plugged into the wall, even though the battery does not hold any charge whatsoever. I know that the battery won't run the iBook very long, but don't know whether it's got enough to start the thing up at all. I'll ask next time I see her.

When I remove the battery entirely, the power plug light goes from amber (meaning it is trying to charge the battery, which I know is bad) to no light at all. In either case, with or without the battery installed, the iBook will NOT start. What I need is someone to test whether a working machine will boot with the battery physically removed from the machine. Since I know that the battery itself is bad, I am trying to determine if that is what is stopping the machine from starting.

OK, I misunderstood that part, but it _should_ run without a battery installed.

Stephen, here is a forum website that is "clamshell ibook specific". I am sure you can find your answer there.

If the above URL seems to not work.If it doesn't, go to this site and find the ibook folder

My 366MHz clamshell iBook runs fine with the battery removed. I just tried it. The power light does not change to amber. I think your motherboard has a problem.

What I am saying is that with ALL the clamshell iBooks that I have had over the years, both mine and those that I have setup for others, ALL of them DID run with no Battery installed and just the Power Adapter connected.
Me who has messed with a pile of old iBooks.........
