iMac won't stay asleep

  1. I've had this problem under both 10.3.8 and 10.3.9, possibly earlier releases too. Flat-panel iMac.

If I put it to sleep, it stays asleep. But very very often, if it goes to sleep via Energy Saver preferences, it wakes up immediately. I don't think it's a port thing -- I've had it sleep properly with everything connected, and not sleep properly with everything detached.

    Examples from System Log:

    Jun 28 18:51:01 localhost mDNSResponder[175]: mDNSResponder Sleeping at 58846790
Jun 28 18:51:07 localhost kernel: AppleNMI mask NMI

Jun 28 15:33:43 localhost kernel: Wake event 0020
Jun 28 15:33:43 localhost kernel: AppleNMI unmask NMI

    Etc.

I've trashed Energy Plist to no avail. I've reset PRAM. Repaired permissions.

Anybody know what "Wake event 0020" is? Anybody have suggestions?

    Many thanks,
    Steve.

    Hi Steve,
well, I must admit I don't know what "Wake event 0020" is, but do you checked if the Energy Saver Preferences/Options/Wake Up for Ethernet access box is unchecked? (I'm not sure it is the right sentence, in France, the box is named : "Réactiver pour l'accès au réseau ethernet de l'administrateur"). It may be because something in your local network pings your Imac when it go to sleep, then mDNSresponder get the ping and wake up the machine. It happenned here, networking with a linuxed XboX and a FreeBSD box. Dunno why, I checked port routing, firewalls, tried another router...so I deactivated the "Ethernet wake up" option.

    I hope it'll help,
please excuse any mistakes in this post as english is not my natural speech. Regards,
    Zorglub

  3. Hmm, my iMac doesn't like to stay asleep either. But the symptoms appear a bit different.

I don't even have any Bluetooth devices. I wonder if I should deactivate Bluetooth (assuming I can figure out how!).

  4. Your language worked, that's for sure. Many thanks. I unchecked that and it seemed to solve the problem. Odd, the only network I'm on is my ISP. There's just one computer in my house...

    Thanks again, Zorglub!
