I have a 40gb iPod bought for christmas.
When I charge it by mains plug it charges fine but when it is charged in the dock it comes out with little/no power.
Anyone got any ideas why or how to combat/solve problem?
Cheers

It's a software bug with the battery indicator (henceforth know as the battery randomometer) that was introduced during the last iPod update (v2.1). It'll sort itself out as you use it.

Although, as has already been mentioned, the 2.1 battery meter is screwed up, I also read somewhere (probably iPodLounge) that the iPod does not charge over a firewire cable from a sleeping Mac and that it will only recharge if the Mac is awake. I've taken to charging from the mains adaptor and just plugging in to my iBook when I need to update my iPod.

Hi all,
Having just bought a new 5th Gen (rev A) ipod (30GB), do you think its cool to charge this up from an AC outlet using an old firewire cable and ipod AC adapter supplied wth my original 3rd gen ipod?
Or should I just keep charging it using the supplied USB2 cable connected to my Mac?
Surely it can't do it any harm?
Thanks in advance.

How retro of you!
The dock interface is the same. It will charge OK. IIRC the previous gen of iPods put a warning message about using obsolete tech^W^WFirewire when you connected one.
Cheers,
Chris

AIUI (E&OE) both will charge it fine, but you can only sync via USB2.
I understand why they did that but I still hate it.

shouldn't be a problem at all, far as i understand firewire will still charge just no data.
