-
Xeno - 08 September 2005
1) Will iPod nano charge off of any USB port.
2) Will nano mount on WinXP as as a flash drive w/out having to load any software?
If 1+2=True, I'm gettin one.

1 - yes (beware underpowered USB hubs thou)
2. Since the ipod, ipod min and shuffle can be used as disks to don't see why they would go backwards with the nano.

My beef is it doesn't come with an AC adapter. When I travel, I often don't have a computer and therefore USB port to charge it. At $250 for 4GB, I don't think I should have to cough up extra $$$ jsut for a charger.

Its becoming common, isn't it, for these things that use to be included to now be accessories. However, 14 hours is a good battery life and it does have the normal full size ipod connector so there are numerous cheap car chargers for it.

It seems that that has been Apple's strategy as of lately. mini Mac is so pared down at the base price it is useless. I don't know of any other manufacturers that dont include an AC adapter. I might add the iPod line is at the top of the pricing structure in terms of mp3 players. I guess for people that are mindless drones and have to have the same white mp3 player that every 3rd person on the street has, money is no object.

Useless? It has 512MB RAM now, and 1.25GHz CPU. That's the same as my G4 iMac which works *very* well, thank you very much.
Care to point out exactly how it is 'useless'?

Very simple- it doesn't come with a mouse or keyboard for $499. Can you do anything with a computer without a mouse or keyboard?

I, for one, am more likely to buy a computer that doesn't come with a mouse/keyboard/monitor. I've already got them, and don't want or need more.
I can understand how someone would feel otherwise, but you can always buy those separately.

Good idea. It isn't something I would need often, so that would probably work for me.

Of course you can BUY them separately. My point was that Apple has been offering less accessories to keep the base price down. I think it is because their products are expensive relative to the competition. I am not saying that is bad. If you want something easier to use, you should pay more. If you want a flashy design, you should pay more.

You may have one already! You can use a powered USB hub to charge it. Not as slick, but that's what I use when I take my i-shuffle away from home for an extended time. On shorter trips, it's not an issue as the power lasts so long between charges.

This should probably work for this (and other USB-chargable things): http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000167V46/ref=cm_eaf_asin_title/
Download Power Manager and start saving.
