Mac won't shut down

   When I try to shut down (or restart) my Power Mac 6500/250 I get a system error that says " Finder error 41" and a restart button. The only way I can shut down is to pull the power.

   Does anyone know what I did and how I can fix it?

   The "error 41" message usually indicates system software corruption, which can be fixed by re-installing your system software.

   Error 41 is typically a "Finder is damaged" error. Trashing the Finder prefs often fixes it. If not, replacing the Finder itself should do it.

   Since the problem only occurs at shutdown, I'd start by seeing if there are any items in the System Folder's Shutdown Items folder and, if there are, disabling them.

   I trashed the Finder prefs file. It cannot be emptied from the trash even holding down the option key while empting the trash. I replaced the Finder itself.

   Neither of these solved the problem. What do I do next please?

   I replied on the other thread you started that you should reinstall the OS (BTW, cross-posting to up to five relevant groups is much preferred to multi posting separate threads as it keeps everything together and prevents repetition). BUT, does the problem occur if you reboot with the shift key down?

    The problem does not occur if I reboot with the shift key down. I didn't reinstall the OS yet.

    Then it's either a control panel or extension causing the problem. What operating system version are you running? What third party system extensions are installed?

    I'm running OS 8.0

    Under System Folder/Extensions I have 136 files and folders. I'm not sure what you mean by 3rd party.

    If you are running System 8.0, why are you, in another thread, talking about trying to install System 7.0? Do you not have the system install disks anymore? Even so, again, consider installing System 7.5.3 rather than 7.0.

    He means all "non-Apple" extensions and control panels that were not installed by the Apple system installer.

    Just so. Extension Manager control panel shoul list them by set.

    Henry: Disable any non Apple CPs and extensions, reboot. Problem gone? Re-enable half of the disabled ones. Reboot? Problem back? Disable half of the ones you just enabled. Etc, etc.

    I have two Mac's. One has OS 8.0 on it and the other OS 8.6. I would like to get either one of them to OS 7.5.x so my wife's software will run on one of them.

    She doesn't have the original install disks for the 7200 because after she upgraded to 7.5.2 she said to herself "what do I need these 7.0.1 disks for" and threw them away.

    Um, the 7200 shipped with 7.5.2 installed and can't run anything lower. The original Power Macs (6100, 7100 and 8100) shipped with 7.1.2 and cannot run anything lower.

    What's the model of the other Mac you have on hand and which program is she trying to run?

    In the Mac HD/System Folder/Control Panels/ folder, look for an item named "Extensions Manager". Run it. There's a menu at the top that should have an item called something like "Mac OS 8 Base" or "Mac OS 8 All" - if you choose either one of those, Extensions Manager will disable all non-Apple extensions and control panels in the list. You can scan the list to see what got disabled.

    Install OS 8 or OS 9 (I might have some for sale somewhere - let me know if you are interested).

    What software will run under 7.5, but not under 8.x?
