MacBook Pro insomnia

My wife has an "original" 17in MacBook Pro (i.e. not Core2Duo) that starts to misbehave after roughly 2 days of uptime. For the first two days after booting it will sleep properly when the lid is closed, but thereafter it refuses to unless commanded to do so via the Apple menu Sleep item.

I've tried individually running each of the programs she tends to have open to see if there's something that is preventing sleep, but to no avail. Anyone seen this problem? Anyone got any ideas?

I had it for a while and then it spontaneously went away. I think I'd repaired permissions or something since then.
