Shut Down Problem

   Hi,

   I'm on a 700Mhz G4 eMac with 10.4.1. Ever since I got 10.4.1 I can't properly Shut Down. It won't go all the way off. A message comes on in several languages saying I must restart the computer by holding down the power button for several seconds. When I restart and log back in a get a message that says the OSX quit unexpectedly (I guess improperly). The report to send to Apple says that it's an "Unresolved kernel trap"

   Any suggestions?

   This didn't happen with 10.4. 10.4.1 has had mor spinning beach ball, too.

   Boot up with 10.4 DVD and do an Archive and Install (re-installing Tiger)?

   or Boot up with 10.4 DVD and run Disk Utility on Hard Drive?

   You are having a kernel panic. Is there any interesting hardware connected to this machine? Does this same problem occur if you hold the Shift key down throughout the startup process (called "safe boot mode") and then shut down? m.

   I haven't started up with the shift key. What's connected to the computer is an Apple Keyboard, a Logitech cordless mouse and a LexMark laser printer, plus a cable modem connected via the ethernet.

   Given this?

   Interesting. My wife just 5 minutes ago did her first shutdown since 10.4.1 (actually a restart off a different disk) and get the same thing. This is a 2x1GHz MDD. First time ever on a machine that sees daily use although it really doesn't get shut down or restarted all that often beyond system updates.

   Try starting up holding the shift key down and then immediately shut down without running any apps. Report.

   Systems close files, caches etc when rebooting. Get Macaroni 35 day trial from http://www.atomicbird.com/ and use all cleaning, permission utilities in it.

   The reason I suggest Macaroni is its developer posts/reads here.

   But first, as you may have guessed, run disk utility from OS X install DVD, it boots real quick.

   Macaroni is a nice utility but it doesn't perform miracles.

   I am experiencing this same problem on my G4 Quicksilver 733MHz. I tried shuting down and restarting in safe mode, then immediately shuting down. My computer still had a Kernel Panick.

   Thanks for the help and advice.
