1. Is there a keyboard shortcut that can put this Mac Mini to sleep if I'm not using an Apple keyboard? (I don't have an Eject key.)

  2. I'm sure you could do it with something like Quicksilver.

  3. Didn't see anything in Quicksilver relating to Sleep. Bummer. I'll look at some other shortcut type programs though. Sure would be nice if Apple realized that there are people that would like to operate their Macs with a non-Apple keyboard, without being penalized for such blasphemous behavior. :)
Does anyone know if this is the sleep command in 10.4.11? /System/Library/Perl/5.8.6/darwin-thread-multi-2level/auto/POSIX/sleep.al I've tried Bean, Pref Edit, Spark and Quicksilver and couldn't see a way of enabling Sleep with a keyboard shortcut.

Is something preventing you from using Google to search for things like "quicksilver sleep"? ; ) </big-old-freaking-hint>

You really should try Google. ; )

I just did another Google search for:

    quicksilver "lock screen"

    And found this:

  6. Also, this works like a charm on my PowerMac G5:

  7. For Panther. Doesn't work on my Tiger 10.4.11 version unfortunately.

  8. Maybe I'm doing something wrong. But I just couldn't get sleep to be activated by a kb shortcut.

  9. Did you read all the comments? ; )

You have to drag the Keychain menu all the way to the left for that method to work correctly, because Mac OS X searches the left-most menus first, apparently. Seems like a kind-of broken method to me.

Other comments mention better solutions, like the LockTight utility I pointed out to you in another post.

  10. You actually tried it out, or are you assuming that?

It works in Leopard, so if I were you I'd try it out. ; )

  11. You can create a sleep application with Automator. Use the Run Shell Script action and enter this:

osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to sleep'

Save the workflow as an application. Then use any one of various utilities to assign a shortcut key to open that application. I use one called Spark that works well.

    K.

    Lang may your lum reek.

  12. I'll try it. I've got Spark. Thanks.

  13. Tried it. I've got Leopard coming so I'll try it with that when it arrives. Maybe in a week I guess.
