College - Energy Saving Example with Power Manager

Your computers use a lot of electricity. Computers are second on the list for office electricity consumption.

Power Manager saves you money by saving energy.

Potential savings in academic environments are even greater. Shared computers in labs are more likely to be left on overnight and during breaks, using unnecessary energy and eating into limited budgets.

Saving energy is more than just saving electricity. It is saving time and effort, being more productive and efficient.

Energy Saving Research

Late in 2006 Megan Bray produced a comprehensive white paper collating all the facts, figures, assumptions, and conclusions from recent energy saving studies. We sponsored Megan’s research.

The example below uses Megan’s research to demonstrate the possible savings available to colleges, universities, and offices. The example does not represent real organisations and is provided as a guideline.

Potential Savings

“Greenbel Advanced College has recently expanded and upgraded its computer labs. It has added one new teaching lab and a free access lab for students. During the upgrade all the staff received new 17 inch iMacs; their old computers now make up the student lab.

The student lab and the existing teaching lab each have 23 older model iMacs with CRT displays. The new teaching lab has 23 new 17 inch iMacs.

With so many computers scattered around the college, turning them off was a challenge. Power Manager ensures that all the computers are turned off at night and asleep when they are not being used during the day. Nighttime maintenance and back-up is no problem. Power Manager can turn the computers on for the maintenance to take place and turn them off again later. And, all the computers are on, ready for use in the morning.

Teachers no longer have to wait for late-running classes in the labs, or waste time with computers left logged in. Power Manager automatically logs out users at the end of each class, ensuring the lab computers are ready for each class, and left in a secure state.

Power Manager helps Greenbel meet its environmental targets without spending time and money on staff awareness programmes. It ensures the computers are as energy efficient as possible.

Power Manager saves Greenbel Advanced College over 1,000 € each year.”
