G4 refuses connection after sleeping

However after a few days (with the G4 put to sleep whenever it is out of use for half an hour) it stops accepting connections from the iBook

If my G4 has been recently booted, I have no problem connecting to it from my iBook (both running 10.2.6). However after a few days (with the G4 put to sleep whenever it is out of use for half an hour) it stops accepting connections from the iBook -- I get an error message that the user ID or password is invalid. They are not; if I reboot the G4 and click retry from the iBook all is well again.

The length of time before problems occur has varied from one day to several, but I have never yet had it fail after less than an overnight sleep.

Any suggestions for curing the problem short of a reboot?

more than likely some process or service was dropped while it was asleep. this happens to me sometimes with 'nmbd' when i try to connect from a windows PC to my iMac, after my iMac has been asleep.

i've never connected Mac to Mac, so i'm not sure what protocol you use to connect from Mac to Mac. look for a process like 'nmbd' that is not active when your G4 awakes from sleep.

Try turning off the sleep feature for the CPU and leave it on only for the monitor and disk drives. This change can be made in the energy saver preferences panel.

The G4s have hardware/software problems related to sleeping. Send plenty of feedback to Apple so maybe they'll get their crap together.

A workaround may be to install a non-Apple Ethernet card in the G4. My Asante card works great even while Apple's Ethernet is dead-on-wake.
