I can't help you with why, but my iBook has shown this behavior from when I got it. I am running OS X 10.2.2 on it with DSL access to the Internet through Airport.
When it just came on were you running different version of the OS?

No, It came with Jaguar. I too am using Airport, btw. I am relived to know that it is not unique to my machine, and so most likely does not portend disaster.
