Hello everyone,

I'm having a problem with my new iBook G4 (10.4.3) hanging on logout and not always shutting down. I've tried resetting the pmu, but the problem persists. I saw a post on the net suggesting background processes might still be running, thus causing the problem. Regardless, has anyone else had this problem, and does anyone have a fix?

Thanks, Russ

I had it with an older version of LiteSwitch.

Hmmm, I'm not running LiteSwitch--but how did you resolve the problem?

Well, it was an older version. A newer version did the trick. Sorry, no help to you.

How do you identify these programs?

I have had problems like that, it happens when a program is running in the background and will not shutdown to allow the computer to shut off.

How do you identify these programs? Most the time the system will tell you what program. You couldand do a force quit if you had to, that will also show any programs that are running.

When I had this problem it turned out to be due to installing "SpeedTools Utilities". This program installs a startup process which was refusing to quit. You might try looking for something similar. If you have anything in /Library/StartupItems, delete it and see if that helps. Use Activity Monitor to track down unexpected processes. m.

I've never seen my system show such programs at shutdown/restart. Should this happen under 10.4.3?

Thanks. I tried tried setting Microsoft Auto Update to manual. I suspect this is the culprit (that or clamXav).

Thanks, FYI

This problem has been around at a rather low level for a long time. Sort of like "...they all do that (once and a while)..." In my case, a 15" PB running 10.3.7, it happened the very first time I shut the PB down after bringing it home from the store ! No non-Apple installed software what-so-ever. The PB has hung on shutdown twice more in the year I have owned it. Each time, it finally shut itself down after about an hour without me doing anything.

Tiger may be different than Panther but in this case I doubt it.

Thanks for the info. I've been looking at a combo of background startup processes and the lookupd bug (apparently still alive and well in 10.4.3) as causes for the problem. If fixing these doesn't do it, then at least I have an idea of whom to blame! :/
