I had the same problem with my Powerbook adapter. Radio Shack (and others) sell something called "The Juice" which powers almost any brand of laptop, from AC or car. It was $100, but hopefully it will be the last one I have to buy for a long time.
It doesn't light up the plug like the original did when plugged in. *sniff*

I haven't bought their AC adapters but do have two of their auto adapters and both work well. I just recently got the second adapter but the first one has seen extensive use and is still going strong.
