IBook wont wake up properly

Sometimes, when opened (from sleeping closed) the screen comes on, but it fails to wake, or give a cursor.

Sometimes, when opened (from sleeping closed) the screen comes on, but it fails to wake, or give a cursor. The only way to get it going again is to restart it. Occasionally when booted, it 'hoots' once and the sleep light flashes and then it boots fine. Also, occasionally it tries to boot into OS9, which isn't installed.

None of these are a real problem, BUT, this is going to be my mum's computer (I wasn't going to let her have a PC) and I'd like it to be a bit more reliable before handing it over.

It is running the latest copy of Panther, adding more memory didn't help or making anything worse, and everything else is completely standard. Oh, and I made sure sure the airport card was properly installed.

Any ideas?

Thom

As a follow-up - if I put it to sleep when open, it wakes properly.

How is it now ? Any change ?

When you try to wake it, is there disc activity or does it just fail to respond ?

It is more reliable - 1 in 10 wake-ups don't work properly.

it just sits there, no activity, the screen comes on but the clock doesn't run. I get a beachball, and it has to be restarted.

I've passed it on to my mum (it was bought for her) so it is all rather academic now - I was just hoping there was a (simple) solution.

Thanks for taking an interest... if the iBook gets worse, I'll get her to post it down to me and I'll ask again in here.

Regards,

Thom

There was a problem with some machines - I don't remember which ones now though - where they wouldn't wake after being closed due to a fault with a magnetic switch located near the HD.

Interesting - I'll have a look into that.
