I'm sure the power light on my iMac used to be lit when it's on - it only illuminates (flashing on/off) when in sleep mode. Is this my fading memory or is it supposed to be like this?

It is supposed to be like that.
The light should come on when energy saver turns the display off. In 'normal' use the light is off.
