Did the capacity get adjusted on the way up or does it still show 21940?

BTW, 21940 sounds like a humongous battery. 12 hours!
I thought that Powerbook batteries were around 4500-5000.

When you run a complete cycle from full to empty to full, does the capacity recalibrate?

Have you considered trickle-calibration?
Discharge at *minimal* load:

set sleep to never for battery and AC.
reboot, have nothing running (except "bat.sh 10"). turn off airport, bluetooth, etc.
unplug everything
dim display right down to off.
wait until coma-sleep

plug in, wake up, turn brightness up so you can see it.
let it charge fully.

you should see it recalibrate.

In my experience, the (dis)charge continuities will be calibrated away after a couple of trickle-calibration cycles.

Here's the latest bat.sh -- this one beeps on discontinuities. (Don't run with an argument <5 or it will beep too much because of "charge" measurement granularity.)

"battery is installed"

This is the normal state.

Flags 436 indicates that
"battery is installed"
"battery at or below warning level"
"battery depleted"
"raw low battery signal from battery"

The battery signals that it is empty. The power management thinks the same.

6739 1 / 21940 mAh 14704 mV 0 mA Flags: 1090519429 20:57:34

Flags 1090519429 indicates that
"charger is connected"
"battery is installed"
"raw low battery signal from battery"

Now you connected the charger. The battery is still signalling that it is empty.

Standard battery, but I had no idea what it should have been saying. This would explain why it used to say I had nine hours. However, since resetting the PMU, it seems incapable of determining the available time anymore.

I ran bat.sh 15. There was almost no change after one cycle. The only difference this time is the battery got down to 89%, when it previously got to 93% or 91%. Here is the output file:

This doesn't seem to be any different than previous runs except it took longer to freeze. Also, on recharge, it didn't jump to 100% until it reached 10% instead of about 6% the last time. It did not re-calibrate and it still does not show the calculated available time, just the percent.

This has been pointed out before. It explains why, when it used to calculate time, that it would tell me, after a charge, I had nine hours when it used to say about 2:30. After resetting my PMU it no longer calculates time. It still shows %, and ioreg seems to works.

So far, nobody has been able to tell me how to make 10.3.6 think I have a normal battery of about 4000 mAh, which is what 10.3.5 thought.

I found the following on Apple's support web site. Perhaps you should try it, though I have no idea whether it was part of a previous update, but I ran the update (up to the point where I would actually have to install it -- didn't want to do that at the moment) on my G4 running 10.3.6, and it didn't tell me that it was not necessary. So it might be worth a try.

Goran -- thanks for the note about the huge Amp. values being negative. Of course the problem is with ioreg, but I have compensated for it in the latest bat.sh -- enclosed below.

Goran -- also, please don't take offense, but consider that the words "capacity" means how much it *can* hold, not how much it does hold. The words used in ioreg, etc. are really unfortunate too. sigh.

Goran provides a good analysis of what the logs indicate. The big problem appears to be that the "capacity" (estimate) is stock at that huge value and won't calibrate down.

I don't know what to suggest to Robert. Perhaps with the logs from bat.sh the problem can be diagnosed better by Apple or someone close to the PM software.

If it were I, I would just learn to live with it, mentally remapping the 2300 mAh battery range into 19600-21940 or whatever.

And/or get a new battery, and keep the old one as a spare.

Here is what I think is happening (anyone who *knows* better, please correct):

The only things that can be *measured* about the battery are:

1. That it is full (nothing's going in :)
2. That it is empty (nothing's coming out :)
3. The current flowing to or from it
4. The voltage

Everything else is *estimated*.

Thus, a battery *has* a capacity.
The displayed capacity is what is determined by a process called calibration, which places an estimated capacity value into the power mgt register (or words to that effect).

The displayed charge of the battery (measured in mAh) is *estimated* from how much current has flowed into or out of the battery over time. This estimate gets worse and worse, of course, and that's why batteries need to be calibrated periodically.

[ANALOG: Imagine a car with a gas tank. You would like to know how many litres of fuel it contains, but there is no direct way to measure it. You know the tak's capacity when new. You know that it's full when you see the gas at the brim when filling. You know that it's empty when you feel it sputter. You have a gauge that measures the height of fuel in the tank. The gas pump tells you how much gas you added. You also have a flow-meter that tells you the rate of flow out of the tank. But there are two additional things: the gas liquid gas tends to evaporate over time, and also to solidify, building up a thickening layer of solid and reducing the usable capacity of the tank. After about 500 fill-ups, your gas tank's capacity may be reduced to half.

So, what can you do? You get your onboard computer to try to keep track of all the gas you put in , and the gas that's consumed. Ooops, forgot to tell you, there is no gas pump where you can fill up your tank in 2 minutes and know how much you put in. The only way to get gas into the tank through this weird reverse fuel cell thingy that attaches to your fuel injector and reverse-injects fuel up the fuel line into the tank. O.K. your car's onboard computer tries to keep track of all that, but it's like estimating your bank balance by trying to keep track of income and expenses, where each transaction is only a few pennies, and you're rounding to the nearest nickel or dime. So, every once in a while you drain the whole thing and fill it up, in order to get a good estimate of the current holding-capacity of the tank. That's what calibration means.]

Now, in addition to all that, there is a level-gauge. (Voltage). There is a fairly close relationship between Voltage and actual charge, the details depending on actual capacity.

I have found that by monitoring the voltage I can estimate the remaining charge fairly well. Better than a poorly calibrated PMU.

In particular, with my 600Mhz iBook, empty is close to 10.7V. 10.8V is about 7% and 10.9V is around 17%. (YMMV) bat.sh beeps when it falls below there. Thus, when my PMU indicates 80% but the voltage is down to 10.9V I know I've really only got about 17%.
