Portables: turn off sleep light?

does anybody know of an app/trick to turn off the white pulsing light when a powerbook is closed?

Its under the header, Special at the top of the screen---->shutdown!

That feature is controlled by hardware. To de-activated it, you're going to need to perform surgery on your machine to stop the LED from lighting up at all (either by wrapping the LED in something opaque, or removing one lead from the LED).
