Screen dimming on startup and sleep

The screen will remain at full brightness until it goes to sleep.

I have a WallStreet Powerbook running Mac OS X 10.2.8. This machine has one annoying characteristic that manifests itself as follows:

When I turn the machine on, the screen stays dim and when the system is finally up, I can get the screen to full brightness by clicking once on the increase brightness button.

The screen will remain at full brightness until it goes to sleep. When that happens the screen is at a brightness where the screen is dim again but I can see (if I squint) the menu bar. I can then restart the machiine and go through the scenario all over again.

Is there any way to make this thing work right again? Mess with preferences, etc?

Thanks.

Yes, my wallstreet showed the same problems shortly after I installed 10.2 on it. You can fix this. Reset your PMU (SHIFT-FN_CTL_POWER). It likely will come back however.

I used to have regular PMU related issues with my wallstreet (not waking from sleep, dim screen on boot, waking only if the batteries were removed, etc). I thought there was something wrong with the PMU but it passed all hardware tests.

I did find a permanent cure, however. Recently I bought an Orange Micro USB/Firewire PCMCIA card (to interface it with my digital camera) and made the mistake of installing their drivers. It killed the wallstreet; rendered it unbootable (good trick, bad Orange Micro!!!), oh, and by the way, the drivers appear to be totally unnecessary. I was forced to do in reinstall of 10.2 then upgrade to 10.2.8. Since the reinstall can preserve all your settings (a good thing) and installed software, all it cost me was time and network bandwidth to download all the upgrades via software update. Since I did that, I've not had a single PMU related problem. I'm assuming that one of the 10.2.x updates before 10.2.8 did something bad to the PMU that wasn't undone in subsequent updates and that somehow that got skipped in going directly to the 10.2.8 combo updater.
