Wake-up problem cured but why?

About 6 months ago I began having 1 minute wake-ups on my iMac 400DV. Nothing I did would solve the problem. A couple of days ago I expanded my memory from 64 mb to 192 mb. The problem has gone away. I now have 2 second wake-ups. Why?
